Veteran outdoor writer Al Smith, of Defiance, and his daughter, Kristina Smith, recently were honored by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio (OWO) for some of their work in 2018. This was the fourth consecutive year both were honored.
The elder Smith, who writes a guest column for the Lima News, won third place in the best newspaper outdoor column writing category. Smith’s column entries were on a variety of topics including one on the annual Division of Wildlife district open houses, several U.S. and international agencies looking for evidence of grass carp in the Sandusky River and birdwatching at numerous sites around Lake Erie. Smith has won several awards over nearly 40 years of outdoor writing.
Kristina, a Defiance native, lives in Port Clinton and finished third in the best color photo with a picture of an American Redstart that appeared on The Birding Wire. She also won an excellence in craft in the open photography class in the Ben Doepel Memorial Award with a pair of bald eagles sitting in a tree that appeared on The Birding Wire. She has won a number of awards in the past for her outdoor writing.
Winners in the OWO contest were named at the organization’s annual conference held in Rossford.
