Shay Smiddy became the 11th Defiance High School baseball product to be drafted on Wednesday, after the Tampa Bay Rays selected the righty in the 36th round of the Major League Baseball Draft.
“It’s an honor to be selected to play at the next level and just want to give thanks to my family, coaches and everyone that supported me in Defiance,” said Smiddy. “The support in Defiance is second to none and I’m proud to say I came from there.”
Smiddy is currently finishing up his junior campaign at Louisville. The No. 7 Cardinals are getting set to host No. 10 East Carolina in a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional starting Friday with the winner advancing to the College World Series.
Smiddy holds a 2.31 ERA and a 1-0 mark in 19 relief showings. In 23.1 innings, Smiddy has allowed just 11 hits while fanning 28 and walking 18. Foes are hitting a minuscule .139 off him.
