After allowing a whopping nine runs in the first inning, Napoleon stormed back in a break between trips to Alaska and Minnesota on Wednesday, knocking off Pemberville in a 12-11 stunner at Rutter Field at Defiance College.
A three-run second inning helped start the comeback as the Bandits (28-9) trailed 11-5 through five frames. A sixth-inning RBI single from Brandon Shafer (Defiance) helped trim the deficit to five runs before a decisive seventh frame knotted things up.
Dakota Benner (Montpelier) and Landon Willeman (Napoleon) rapped RBI singles while Nathan Vold (Ayersville) doubled and Shafer slammed a two-run double with two outs in the seventh to tie the game at 11.
In the bottom of the ninth, Willeman got the rally going with a one-out single to left, followed by double to right field from Axel Shanks (Patrick Henry). After a walk to Hunter Bostater (Fairview) loaded the bases, Shafer came through once more with a line drive to left field that scored Willeman and continued the Bandits’ torrid run of 13 wins in their last 14 games.
Daryke Bass’ (Edon) scoreless inning of relief earned the win for the Bandits, striking out a pair while Bryer Bentley (Montpelier) added three innings of scoreless ball.
Willeman and Shafer led the charge in the batters’ box as Willeman ripped six hits from his leadoff spot and Shafer added five base hits and four RBIs.
Having just returned from Alaska earlier this week, the River Bandits will make the 10-hour trip to St. Paul, Minn. and face off against Tri-City Maroon and Team Manitoba (Canada) on Friday at the University of Northwestern St. Paul.
