Fairview and Defiance won their first round sectional contests on Friday, at Defiance. Fairview used a 13 run sixth inning to top Wayne Trace in six innings, 18-2. Meanwhile, Defiance nipped Hicksville, 5-3.
Fairview will face Antwerp today at 11 a.m., with the winner advancing to the semifinals against Defiance. In the other contest today, Hicksville and Wayne Trace will face off at 1 p.m., in a first round loser’s bracket game.
In Defiance’s game, an injury to Hicksville’s left fielder and the combined speed of Defiance and three Hicksville errors were the Aces’ undoing.
Defiance had jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Hicksville tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third inning on a wild pitch and two straight RBI singles with two outs.
Hicksville had a chance to take the lead in the top of the fifth, with two straight two-out singles. But the Bulldogs’ pitcher Jacob Howard intentionally walked the next batter. And with Hicksville playing with just eight players, there was no batter to fill the next position, which became an automatic out and the inning was over.
Defiance then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when David Jimenez hit a single, stole second and third and came home on a throwing error by the Hicksville catcher, to third base.
Defiance then added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, without the benefit of a hit. Caden Kline reach on an error, stole second and third and scored on another throwing error by the Hicksville catcher.
Jacob Howard picked up the win for Defiance, going the allotted amount of 125 pitches in 6.2 innings. He left with two outs and two strikes on the next batter. He allowed nine hits, but struck out 11, while walking two.
Defiance’s Jack Mortier came on to get the final out, with a strikeout, to record the save.
Dylan Meek was the hard luck loser for Hicksville, striking out four and allowing seven hits and just two earned runs.
In other games reported, in the North Sectional, Wauseon topped Delta, 2-0, while Archbold stopped Tinora, 7-2.
Archbold will play against Napoleon at Wauseon today, at 11 a.m. The winner of that one will face Wauseon at Wauseon Sunday, at 2 p.m. Tinora and Delta will square off at 1:30 at Wauseon today, in a first round loser’s bracket game.
In the South Sectional, Ottawa-Glandorf topped Kalida, 7-1 and Miller City topped Patrick Henry, 12-5.
Next, Patrick Henry will play Kalida at Miller City today, at 10 a.m. in a loser’s bracket game. Ottawa-Glandorf will travel to Ayersville to take on the Pilots at 10 a.m. today, while Miller City will face Holgate at Ayersville, at 12 p.m.
