WAUSEON — ACME Sectional baseball gets underway this evening. Locally, the double elimination tournament will take place at three sites, with the top two teams from each site advancing to districts.
In District 2, Wauseon will host Delta, at 6 p.m. tonight, while Archbold will host Tinora at 6 p.m. Archbold finished the regular summer season with an 8-6 record.
The Bluestreaks lost to Bryan three times, along with Coldwater, Anthony Wayne and Bellefontaine. Archbold edged Tinora, 2-1, the one time they faced each other.
“We’re young, but competitive and we lost a lot of heartbreakers this summer,” said Archbold ACME skipper Kirk Weldy. “(For instance), we had a 5-0 lead on Coldwater, but lost, 6-5.”
Top hitters for the Streaks are Ethan Hagans, D.J. Newman, Nolan Garcia and Drake Mohring. Hagans and Newman were the top pitchers this summer and Hagans is slated to get the start against Tinora.
“Hopefully, we can get through to districts, but we’ll face one of the better teams in our bracket right away, in Tinora,” Weldy said. “They’re young, but talented and we will have a challenge.”
The winner of the Archbold-Tinora matchup will face Napoleon Saturday at Wauseon, at 11 a.m. The winner of that one will then face the winner of Wauseon and Delta on Sunday, at 2 p.m, with the winner advancing to districts.
The losers of the Wauseon-Delta and Archbold-Tinora will square off on Saturday at Wauseon, at 1:30 p.m. Next, there will be a losers bracket game on Sunday at Wauseon at 5 p.m. The winner of that one and the loser of the 2 p.m. Sunday game will then face off, Monday, at 6 p.m. at Napoleon, with the winner finishing second and then advancing to districts.
In District 1 at Defiance, top seed Defiance (12-8) will face Hicksville, today, at 7 p.m. The opener will be between Wayne Trace and Fairview, at 5 p.m. The losers of those two games will square off Saturday, at 1 p.m.
The winner of Friday’s early game will face Antwerp, Saturday, at 11 a.m. The winner of Saturday’s early game will then tangle with the Hicksville-Defiance winner on July 7, at 7 p.m.
There will be a losers bracket game on Saturday at 5 p.m. and another loser’s bracket game on Monday, July 8, at 5 p.m. The championship game will take place on July 8, at 7 p.m. If the winner’s bracket team suffers a loss, there will be a final championship game on July 9, at 5 p.m.
In the Williams County Sectional Bracket, Bryan is the top seed, with a 16-1 record. Top hitters for Bryan are Nate Miller, Breven Deckrosh and Brooks Brown. The Golden Bears’ top pitchers are Benny Roebuck and Dom James.
Friday’s contests will have North Central vs. Montpelier at Bryan at 5 p.m. and Edon at Hilltop, at 5 p.m. The winner of those two games will face off at Bryan on Sat, July 6, at 11 a.m. The losers will then square off on Saturday at Hilltop, at 11 a.m.
In Friday’s other contest, Edgerton and Stryker will square off at Bryan, at 7:15 p.m. The winner of that one will then take on host Bryan on July 6, at 1:15 p.m.
“Getting a first round bye helps us,” said Bryan ACME skipper Doug Williamson. “If we do everything we normally do, we should advance to districts.”
A win by Bryan would put them in the sectional semifinals on July 7, at 4:15 p.m., against Saturday’s early game winner in the winners bracket.
There will be two loser’s bracker games on Saturday, with the Edgerton-Stryker loser going to Hilltop to face the winner of Saturday’s loser’s bracker contest. There will also be a loser’s bracket game at Bryan on July 7, at 2 p.m.
On July 8, there will be two loser’s bracket games at Bryan, at 5 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. The winner of the 7:15 p.m. game will then play on July 9 in the championship game, against the winner’s bracket winner, at 5 p.m. If the winner’s bracket team loses its first game, there will be a final championship game on July 9, at 7:15 p.m.
