The 2019 Excellence in Youth Leadership Program, presented by Holy Cross Catholic School of Defiance, will honor 32 students in grades 1-12 from Defiance County who have been nominated for the 2019 Excellence in Youth Leadership Award.

The ceremony will take place May 19 at 2 p.m. at the Defiance Knights of Columbus hall. The event is being held thanks to the generosity of United Way of Defiance County, Defiance Area Foundation, and several individual donors. Doors for the event open at 1:30 p.m.

This is the inaugural year for the event, which will recognize one student in four grade categories (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12) with the award. Each winner will be selected from a group of student nominees by an independent panel of volunteer judges. The winner in each age group will receive a $250 stipend to award to a Defiance County non-profit organization of his/her choice. The winners also will be published in The Crescent-News.

Motivational speaker Brian Williams will be the keynote speaker for the event. During his presentation, Williams will discuss the power of the book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.”

Student nominees will receive a SWAG (Students Who Achieve Goals) bag and a special pin recognizing their nomination. (All students in attendance will receive a SWAG bag). In addition, area organizations will be on hand with information on leadership opportunities for middle school and high school students.

Admission for all youth is free with an adult admission ($10 in advance, $15 at the door).

Light refreshments will be served and a copy of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families” will be given to the first 90 families.
