Javone Hilliard was the winner of the 2018 Progeny Creative Writing Contest for his poem “A Day in My Shoes.”

Defiance College senior Javone Hilliard has won the 2018 Progeny Creative Writing Contest, which was sponsored by the Defiance College English Department and Writers Group of Defiance County.

Hilliard’s winning entry was a poem entitled “A Day in My Shoes,” which is from the perspective of an individuals with a disability. His work will be published in the 2018 issue of Progeny, the literary and art magazine of Defiance College.

Hilliard of Indianapolis said his poem illustrate how he sounds and feels when he stutters.

He said he writes poetry “because I feel that’s the only way people can fully understand me. When I’m sad, mad, happy or bored, writing is how I cope. I also write music now because of poetry. Plus, I don’t stutter when I write, until this poem.”

Judges in the contest were Lynn Gilliland, Susan Paulus and Myron Bok, all members of the Writers Group of Defiance County. The group supports community and campus creative writing through its monthly meetings and special projects.
