PAULDING — A sale benefiting the Centre Lumière Christian School for Women in Les Cayes, Haiti, will be held Friday and Saturday at Apostolic Christian Fellowship Center, 12867 County Road, Paulding.

Centre Lumière is a holistic ministry that focuses on equipping women with the gospel, vocational training and skills to care for their families.

The school offers a three-year program with classes in domestic economics, cooking, baking, crochet, embroidery, sewing, hospitality, bookkeeping, health, English and the Bible.

Graduates are prepared to work as handcraft artisans, teach home economics, or work at local hotels, restaurants, or other businesses.

The school has about 30 on-site employees, 40 students and a network of artisans who work from home.

Centre Lumière is a non-profit with a vocational school and business.

The sale will be held Friday from 9:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Items for sale will include, baby and kitchen products, pot holders, embroidered bags, aprons, kitchen towels, doll clothes (that fit American Girl dolls), car seat covers, burp clothes, bibs and many other handcrafted gifts for babies, children and adults.

Churches in the United States host benefit sales for Centre Lumière throughout the year, with 100 percent of the proceeds sent the facility to keep it running.

Haiti is considered the poorest country in the western hemisphere with the unemployment rate is often quoted at a staggering 70-80 percent.

Having regular employment with dependable income allowed the school’s employees options in life that aren’t readily available in Haiti.

They are able to keep their children, rather than place them in orphanages or in other households as restaveks (household servants). It also enables them to pay school tuition as most schools in Haiti are not free.

Some of the women own their own homes, or are working toward that goal. Each woman at the school supports her immediate and extended family. Some have been able to adopt children who are in need of a family.
