PHILADELPHIA — Former Defiance resident Debbie Bates graduated with her Ph.D. in music therapy from Temple University on May 9. Bates was the recipient of the 2019 music therapy research award, given to a graduate student who has demonstrated excellence in research.

Bates is the music therapy manager for the Arts and Medicine Institute at the Cleveland Clinic and a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus.

The daughter of Bernard and Emiko Bates of Defiance, Bates is a 1992 graduate of Tinora High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree in music therapy at the University of Dayton in 1996 and her master’s in music therapy at Temple University.
