COLUMBUS -- Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted notified the director, deputy director and three of four members of the Lucas County Board of Elections on Monday of his intention to remove them from their posts, pending a hearing later this week in Toledo.

"In nearly every other county in the state, board members and staff are able to put aside their differences to meet their responsibilities to voters," Husted wrote in separate letters to the five individuals involved. "In Lucas County, the petty infighting, personality conflicts and sloppy administration have gone on long enough."

He added, "I simply cannot jeopardize the integrity of future elections in Lucas County. The citizens and voters deserve better."

County board Director Gina Kaczala, Deputy Director Daniel DeAngelis and board members Jon Stainbrook, Ron Rothenbuler and Anthony DiGidio are to appear for a hearing on Thursday as part of the removal process.

A hearing officer will subsequently offer a recommendation to Husted, who will then solidify the removals.

Husted completed comparable hearings and removals of two members of the Montgomery County Board of Elections in 2012 after they refused to comply with a directive on early voting hours.

A year later, he removed two members of the Putnam County Board of Elections for violations to the state's open meeting laws.
