Despite freezing temperatures, Republican candidate John McCain delivered an energizing campaign speech this morning on the steps of Defiance Community Auditorium.
Several thousand persons braved the chilly weather, some of them waiting for four hours or more before McCain took the podium around 10:15 a.m. today, 15 minutes after his scheduled stop.
Introduced by his wife, Cindy, and South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, McCain needed less than a half hour to talk about plans to cut taxes, reduce spending, win in Iraq and Afghanistan, and stand up to America's enemies. All the while, he drew sharp comparisons between himself and Democratic candidate Barack Obama, who leads in recent presidential polling.
"We have a clear difference, Sen. Obama and I do," said McCain. "He wants to raise your taxes. Raising taxes makes a bad economy much worse. ... If I'm elected president I won't spend nearly a trillion dollars more of your money, Sen. Obama will. And he can't do that without raising your taxes or digging us further into debt.
"I'm going to make government live on a budget just like you do," continued McCain. "I'll freeze government spending on all but the most important programs like defense, veterans care, Social Security and health care, until we scrub every single government program, get rid of the ones that aren't working for the American people. ... I will veto every single pork barrel earmark bill that comes across my desk."
In recent weeks, McCain has also made note of Obama's plan to redistribute the tax burden.
"He's (Obama) more interested in controlling wealth than creating it, and in redistributing wealth instead of spreading opportunity," McCain said. "I'm going to create wealth for all Americans by creating opportunity for all Americans. Sen. Obama is running to be redistributionist-in-chief. I'm running to be commander-in-chief.
"My opponent's massive new tax increases is exactly the wrong approach in an economic slow down," McCain later added. "The answer to a slowing economy isn't higher taxes. That's exactly what's going to happen when the Democrats have total control of Washington. We can't let that happen. We need pro-growth and pro-jobs economic policies, not pro-government spending programs paid for with higher taxes. This is the fundamental difference between Sen. Obama and me. We both disagree with President Bush on economic policy. The difference is he thinks taxes have been too low and I think spending has been too high."
The redistribution talk surfaced recently following a question to Obama from a Toledo businessman "known as Joe the plumber " concerning how his tax plan would affect him.
"Well, now we've learned more about Sen. Obama's real goals for our country over the last two weeks than we have learned over the last two years," said McCain. "And, that's only because Joe the plumber asked him the right question right here in Ohio. That's when Sen. Obama revealed he wants to ... "spread the wealth around, spread your income around.' "
McCain thought Joe would be at today's rally, but when he called his name, no one answered. Instead, he said, "All right, well you're all Joe the plumber. So all of ya stand up. ... Wherever you (Joe) are, let's give him a round of applause."
As for small businesses like Joe's, McCain said they need support.
"Small businesses employ 84 percent of Americans, and we need to support these small businesses," the Arizona senator said. "Taxing small businesses will kill jobs. We can't let that happen."
On energy policy, McCain said he favors promoting alternatives. But he especially mentioned offshore drilling, nuclear power and coal.
"Remember when we started talking about drilling offshore, he (Obama) said he would ... "consider drilling offshore,'" recalled McCain. "We're going to drill offshore and we're going to do it now. When I'm president we're going to do it now. And, we're going to build nuclear power plants. We can create 700,000 new jobs by building 45 new nuclear power plants. ... We will use clean coal technology. Clean coil technology will restore the economy of this part of the country."
As the campaign nears its end, the McCain camp has portrayed Obama as too unversed in foreign affairs to meet global challenges. McCain said he believes this provides a marked difference, given that he served for many years as a Navy pilot and was held prisoner-of-war during the Vietnam War.
"The next president won't have time to get used to the office," he said. "We face many challenges here at home and many enemies abroad in this dangerous world. Just the other day, Sen. Biden warned that Sen. Obama would be tested with an international crisis. I have been tested, Sen. Obama has not. Sen. Biden referred to how (John) Kennedy was tested in the Cuban Missile Crisis, and I have a little personal experience in that. I was on board the U.S.S. Enterprise, sat in a cockpit on the flight deck, waiting to take off. I had a target, I know how close we came to a nuclear war. And, I will not be a president who needs to be tested. We know Sen. Obama won't have the right response to that test because we've seen the wrong response coming over and over again during this campaign. He opposed the surge strategy that's bringing us victory and will bring us victory in Afghanistan. He said he would sit down unconditionally with the world's worst dictators ... ."
McCain's stop in rural Ohio was no surprise. While the Obama campaign has targeted the state's rural areas more than Democrats did in 2004, no president has won the presidency without carrying the state since 1960.
He reminded supporters of that today.
"I need your energy," he said. "I need your enthusiasm and, my friends, I know history. I know the last time anyone was elected president of the United States without carrying the state of Ohio was John F. Kennedy. We're going to carry Ohio and we're going to win the presidency, and we need you out there working every single moment."
And, he acknowledged that he still trails in the polls but, "We're coming back."
"Last night Sen. Obama said that if he lost he would return to the Senate and try again in four years for the second act," explained McCain. "That sounds like a great idea to me. Let's help him make it happen."
In concluding today's speech, McCain showed vigor and fire, exhorting supporters not to give up.
"Don't give up hope," he said. "Be strong, have courage and fight. Fight for a new direction for our economy. Fight for what's right for America. Fight to clean up the mess and corruption, infighting and selfishness in Washington. Fight to get our economy out of the ditch and back into the lead. Fight for the ideals and character of a free people. Fight for our children's future. Fight for justice and opportunity for all. Stand up to defend our country from it's enemies. Stand up. Stand up and fight. America is worth fighting for. ... We never give up. We never quit. We never hide from history. We make history. Now let's go win this election and get our country moving again."

Wendy:

Now is time for the Middle Class citizens to confidently take matters into their own hands and decide the future of our beautiful country based on hope, tolerance, diversity, moderation and above all respecting the values and principles of all of the US citizens and avoid hate, divisions, arrogance, and extremism spewing from people like you.

re: WendyPrice

Your post makes me think. Apparently, we have far more ignorant and flat out stupid people in America than I previously thought. You know regardless of who wins the election, this country is in trouble. With people like you proudly putting their ignorance on display, I think we're all in for a rough ride.

The School Superintendent does not seem to get it. The superintendent facilitated the hosting of a partisan rally on school district property. He arranged for children to be bussed to the rally. Yes, parents had to give approval in advance and the kids did get a chance to see a presidential candidate, but what about the listening part? In a sense children were a captive audience and listened to one sided political presentation. What kid wants to be kept from going on a "field trip" with their classmates? They are not likely to decline an opportunity to get out of the classroom.
How does the school district put party affiliation aside? Will the school teachers help the children determine what knowledge was pertinent and what information was false? Will teachers be able to explain without political bias what statements by McCain were not true? Will teachers ignore their own preference when discussing McCain's speech?

Do they discuss statements about "spreading the wealth" and other McCain Republican talking points? Do the teachers interject opposing Democratic Party views?

I think bussing young children to a political rally and facilitating a partisan one sided speech is inappropriate. The negative aspects associated with allowing use of our public schools for political purposes outweigh all that stuff about children witnessing the political process and knowledge about the stewardship of our democracy. If the Superintendent, administrators, and teachers were truly concerned about stewardship of our democracy they should not allowed young children to attend the McCain rally "hosted" by the school district.

Subject: An open letter to Senator Barack Obama.
Please send this letter out and publicize it.
Dear Sen. Obama,

I was born in Israel and ever since I was a little girl I had the Israeli flag and the American flag hanging on the wall above my bed. My Grandfather, who escaped the holocaust, impressed upon me that America is the land of FREEDOM.
He gave me a photograph of the Statue of liberty with the words:"Give me your poor and your huddled as long as they believe in FREEDOM..." I grew up knowing that one day I will be an Israeli/American.
I worked hard to make my dream come true. On the day I became a citizen, a member of the Kennedy family came with me and after the ceremony I was given a picture of Robert Kennedy, signed by every living member of the Kennedy family. I love my America!
Senator Obama, you are asking us the people, to hire you as our president. I'm a Democrat. I worked hard in support of Sen. Hillary Clinton in the primary. When she suspended her campaign, it took me a while to feel hopeful again, but when Hillary asked me to help you, I jumped to the task.
There is one thing that I cannot sacrifice and that is "FREEDOM". On behalf of the people of America, and many like me from across the world I ask you to show the kind of
Integrity , honesty and transparency that the job of president must demand. I ask you to demand that the tape
That the LA times are withholding is released to the press to insure FREEDOM OF THE PRESS. I ask you to also answer once and for all the following questions that are still on the minds of Americans:
Will you vow to protect "freedom of speech" And "freedom of the press" in the United states of America?
Will you fight to protect Israel's right to exist?
Will you fight against all racism, antisemitism and sexism?
Will you fight to protect Freedom of choice, no matter if personal or economical?
With HOPE in my heart and deep love for America and sincere belief in the American people.
Daphna Ziman

LEBANON " A Warren County judge will decide whether Sen. Barack Obama's name can appear on Ohio election ballots after listening this morning, Thursday, Oct. 30, to a Turtlecreek Twp. man who claims that the Democratic presidential candidate is not a U.S. citizen and cannot be elected president.

David Neal appeared in Warren County Common Pleas Court after filing a lawsuit on Friday. Neal wants a court order to remove Obama's name from ballots to be used in the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Neal claims Obama was not born in the United States and cannot be president because the U.S. Constitution allows only native-born citizens to be elected to that post.

"We're facing a constitutional crisis," Neal said this morning in court. "Until we get to the bottom of this, there's going to be disenfranchisement."

Neal, who described himself as a retired "jack of all trades," said after the hearing that he filed the lawsuit himself and is not working with or for the Republican Party in the lawsuit.

Appearing before Magistrate W. Andrew Hasselbach, Neal said he had researched questions about Obama's birthplace since 2006 and made several requests to the Hawaiian bureau of statistics, Democratic National Party and Ohio Democratic Party for a birth certificate that would prove Obama was born in Hawaii.

"Wouldn't you think a doctor or nurse would have stepped up and said I was in the room when he was born?" Neal said.

In his lawsuit and during the hearing, Neal cited numerous Web sites as sources of information to challenge Obama's birthplace. Neal added that he had to produce birth certificates to sign his children up for youth football.

In a brief filed today disputing Neal's claim, the Ohio Attorney General's office said that Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has "no legal authority to perform" the removal of Obama's name from ballots.

"... the allegations in the Complaint are nothing but speculation and inadmissible hearsay. There is no evidence in the Record that Senator Obama was born in Kenya, or that he somehow lost his United States citizenship during his time in Indonesia. Mr. Neal's allegations are anything but 'clear or free from reasonable doubt' ," the attorney general's brief stated.

Mike Schuler and Steven McGann, representatives from the Ohio Attorney General's office, also appeared this morning in Warren County Common Pleas Court, filed the state's brief and said nothing during the hearing.

Hasselbach asked Neal why he had waited until 11 days before the election to file his claim. Neal said that he had hoped other cases in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. would clear up questions about Obama's citizenship, and when they did not, he decided to take action.

The judge said he would issue a decision on Neal's request for an injunction by noon on Friday, Oct. 31

In reference to McCain's mentioning of his moment on the Enterprise during the Cuban Missile Crisis, I was wondering how differently he would have handled it compared to Kennedy?
My feeling is that he would have enjoyed bombing his target while Kennedy abhored the thought and intelligently avoided the confrontation. McCain is no Kennedy and he is no plumber.

Imagine my surprise to wake up and getting my coffee before going into work in Chicago, and switching on CNN only to see the image of old Defiance High School (wasn't it?) and to hear that John McCain and Joe the Plumber were to appear there shortly. It certainly sent a chill up my spine -- exciting and ironic at the same time.

Exciting because a presidential candidate was actually visiting my family's longtime home. Has this happened before? I remember Bob Hope and Joe E. Brown, but never a presidential candidate. And I'm sure my Mom would brave the elements to be there, dyed in the wool Republican that she is. And I hope to see friends when I get home to view the videos.

Ironic because here's a candidate whose defense policies would send more of our boys and girls overseas, and billions more of our money, in order not to lose what we've already lost (our country's reputation in the world) and not to regain what our policies there gave up (no plan for victory). And, more important, a candidate whose economic policies would continue those "top down" tax breaks of the Bush administration and policies which have hit so hard the businesses and economy of Defiance.

Try as hard as I can, other than the brief media attention the visit will bring Defiance, I cannot think of a single good thing McCain would bring Defiance.

Defiance itself, on the other hand, really looked beautiful!
