Despite freezing temperatures, Republican candidate John McCain delivered an energizing campaign speech this morning on the steps of Defiance Community Auditorium.
Several thousand persons braved the chilly weather, some of them waiting for four hours or more before McCain took the podium around 10:15 a.m. today, 15 minutes after his scheduled stop.
Introduced by his wife, Cindy, and South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, McCain needed less than a half hour to talk about plans to cut taxes, reduce spending, win in Iraq and Afghanistan, and stand up to America's enemies. All the while, he drew sharp comparisons between himself and Democratic candidate Barack Obama, who leads in recent presidential polling.
"We have a clear difference, Sen. Obama and I do," said McCain. "He wants to raise your taxes. Raising taxes makes a bad economy much worse. ... If I'm elected president I won't spend nearly a trillion dollars more of your money, Sen. Obama will. And he can't do that without raising your taxes or digging us further into debt.
"I'm going to make government live on a budget just like you do," continued McCain. "I'll freeze government spending on all but the most important programs like defense, veterans care, Social Security and health care, until we scrub every single government program, get rid of the ones that aren't working for the American people. ... I will veto every single pork barrel earmark bill that comes across my desk."
In recent weeks, McCain has also made note of Obama's plan to redistribute the tax burden.
"He's (Obama) more interested in controlling wealth than creating it, and in redistributing wealth instead of spreading opportunity," McCain said. "I'm going to create wealth for all Americans by creating opportunity for all Americans. Sen. Obama is running to be redistributionist-in-chief. I'm running to be commander-in-chief.
"My opponent's massive new tax increases is exactly the wrong approach in an economic slow down," McCain later added. "The answer to a slowing economy isn't higher taxes. That's exactly what's going to happen when the Democrats have total control of Washington. We can't let that happen. We need pro-growth and pro-jobs economic policies, not pro-government spending programs paid for with higher taxes. This is the fundamental difference between Sen. Obama and me. We both disagree with President Bush on economic policy. The difference is he thinks taxes have been too low and I think spending has been too high."
The redistribution talk surfaced recently following a question to Obama from a Toledo businessman "known as Joe the plumber " concerning how his tax plan would affect him.
"Well, now we've learned more about Sen. Obama's real goals for our country over the last two weeks than we have learned over the last two years," said McCain. "And, that's only because Joe the plumber asked him the right question right here in Ohio. That's when Sen. Obama revealed he wants to ... "spread the wealth around, spread your income around.' "
McCain thought Joe would be at today's rally, but when he called his name, no one answered. Instead, he said, "All right, well you're all Joe the plumber. So all of ya stand up. ... Wherever you (Joe) are, let's give him a round of applause."
As for small businesses like Joe's, McCain said they need support.
"Small businesses employ 84 percent of Americans, and we need to support these small businesses," the Arizona senator said. "Taxing small businesses will kill jobs. We can't let that happen."
On energy policy, McCain said he favors promoting alternatives. But he especially mentioned offshore drilling, nuclear power and coal.
"Remember when we started talking about drilling offshore, he (Obama) said he would ... "consider drilling offshore,'" recalled McCain. "We're going to drill offshore and we're going to do it now. When I'm president we're going to do it now. And, we're going to build nuclear power plants. We can create 700,000 new jobs by building 45 new nuclear power plants. ... We will use clean coal technology. Clean coil technology will restore the economy of this part of the country."
As the campaign nears its end, the McCain camp has portrayed Obama as too unversed in foreign affairs to meet global challenges. McCain said he believes this provides a marked difference, given that he served for many years as a Navy pilot and was held prisoner-of-war during the Vietnam War.
"The next president won't have time to get used to the office," he said. "We face many challenges here at home and many enemies abroad in this dangerous world. Just the other day, Sen. Biden warned that Sen. Obama would be tested with an international crisis. I have been tested, Sen. Obama has not. Sen. Biden referred to how (John) Kennedy was tested in the Cuban Missile Crisis, and I have a little personal experience in that. I was on board the U.S.S. Enterprise, sat in a cockpit on the flight deck, waiting to take off. I had a target, I know how close we came to a nuclear war. And, I will not be a president who needs to be tested. We know Sen. Obama won't have the right response to that test because we've seen the wrong response coming over and over again during this campaign. He opposed the surge strategy that's bringing us victory and will bring us victory in Afghanistan. He said he would sit down unconditionally with the world's worst dictators ... ."
McCain's stop in rural Ohio was no surprise. While the Obama campaign has targeted the state's rural areas more than Democrats did in 2004, no president has won the presidency without carrying the state since 1960.
He reminded supporters of that today.
"I need your energy," he said. "I need your enthusiasm and, my friends, I know history. I know the last time anyone was elected president of the United States without carrying the state of Ohio was John F. Kennedy. We're going to carry Ohio and we're going to win the presidency, and we need you out there working every single moment."
And, he acknowledged that he still trails in the polls but, "We're coming back."
"Last night Sen. Obama said that if he lost he would return to the Senate and try again in four years for the second act," explained McCain. "That sounds like a great idea to me. Let's help him make it happen."
In concluding today's speech, McCain showed vigor and fire, exhorting supporters not to give up.
"Don't give up hope," he said. "Be strong, have courage and fight. Fight for a new direction for our economy. Fight for what's right for America. Fight to clean up the mess and corruption, infighting and selfishness in Washington. Fight to get our economy out of the ditch and back into the lead. Fight for the ideals and character of a free people. Fight for our children's future. Fight for justice and opportunity for all. Stand up to defend our country from it's enemies. Stand up. Stand up and fight. America is worth fighting for. ... We never give up. We never quit. We never hide from history. We make history. Now let's go win this election and get our country moving again."

Living under a rock. Interesting. Because of Democrat partisan hackery and their refusal to rationally analyze politics today without using their socialist lens to view the world they automatically assume those that label Obama a socialist (which he is) condone the actions of the Republican Party. Again, as usual, Democrats are incorrect. The choice before us is a choice between the less of two evils, and that choice is McCain.
How you can say Social Security and Medicare are the most successful programs in America is beyond comprehension and even if they were, both programs will be "bankrupt" within our lifetime. If you are relying on entitlement programs from the government for your retirment you will have a very difficult time. By the way, take a look at the amount of money spent on entitlement programs compared to the money spent on the War. I always thought that the middle class led good lives through hard work, good decisions personally and financially, and a positive outlook. According to you they NEED government to even survive in America.
Did you know McCain and Bush pushed for the reform of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? This would be YEARS ago. Obama, of course, opposed the idea. Do you understand what caused the financial meltdown? Let's just say Democrats, with their preposterous worldview, refused to acknowledge the threat posed by both organizations, and with the help of liberal activist groups pressured banks into making mortgage loans to those that could not afford the payments. It was all done in the name of "fairness" "affordable housing" and of course because they thought that it was "racist" that banks actually took into account whether the loan could be paid.
Yes, banks took advantage of the situation and should be held accountable for running their businesses into the ground, but it is evident that government is the primary culprit--again. I find it comical that you believe Obama "puts values before greed & is the best thing for this country." Take a look at the amount of money donated to his campaign from Fannie and Freddie. Hmm. Interesting.
As for your comments about McCain, I am aware of his shortcomings. Yet the issues you raised are more complex, and he is not a dyed in the wool socialist like Obama. Do what you will November 4th, but it would behoove you to consider the danger of an Obama presidency, but we know your allegiance with what is best for America. Tour allegiance is to a leberal belief system that will destroy America, and that is shameful.

Also, it amazes me that these ppl yelling "Socialist" seem to have been living under a rock these past few weeks while the BUSH REPUBLICAN ADMINISTRATION just SOCIALIZED our entire BANKING and FINANCE industries!! The GOP had control of ALL 3 branches of Govt. from 2000-2006 and look what they did to our country! We have out of control spending and a GIANT government now after BUSH and Co. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black....geez. Social Security and Medicare are the most successful government programs in the history of this nation.. They are a lifeline to millions of MIDDLE CLASS Americans... McCain wants to destroy it by privatizing it so the big money boys can raid it like they have raided everything else that doesn't belong to them...
***The insignificant slander Palin continously uses to rally in votes, along w/ the failed good'ol boy standards of McCain & his hardcore followers only raise the growing disparity between the wealthy and the poor in the U.S., the spiraling rate of debt, both on personal and governmental levels, and the shocking rise in political chaos. No matter what answer Obama gives on Ayers, or how many x's, that hypocrite, dishonest running-mate of Mccain's will never let up. WHY? It's not the truth she's seeking. As if we dont know Palin & her husband has ties to an Alaskian Indian group that wants to secede from the U.S & has animousity towards America? Back home, she has cheered the work of this party who considers her a sister(link below). And,her husband, Todd, was a member of the party for seven years up till she was elected by McCain. I say good, let them go. Isn't Alaska the big welfare grabber anyway? http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-aip3-2008sep03,0,6399468.story (source)
***** By wanting to cont this war w/ American money (11 billion)in some war-torn sand country Americans will never see, McCain, aligns himself squarely w/ Mr. Bush, who has been counting on a Republican victory next month to see through his strategy of avoiding a rigid timetable for withdrawals in Iraq " the issue, more than any other, on which the president's legacy will rest. McCain has voted "NO!"over 10xs on pro-veteran & active serv. member issues such as health care & body armour, body armour that would have protected many of our son's & husbands serving when under attack. I can't believe so many have forgotten that. Good! someone put it on YouTube.
Just be sure to vote & as you do ask how the policies McCain supported until he decided to run have been working for you.

Hate to say it, but McCain has no room to call Obama a socialist and Palin ESPECIALLY has not room to call Obama a socialist. Just look at her time as Governor of Alaska.
Her own words at one time: "And Alaska - we're set up, unlike other states in the union, where it's collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs."
and
"Alaska is sometimes described as America's socialist state, because of its collective ownership of resources?"
Looks to me like she's the pot calling the kettle black. She (and McCain) call him a socialist and attack and slander him for "spreading the wealth around" (according to them), and yet here's Mrs. Hypocrisy herself doing the EXACT same thing in Alaska!
If only McCain hadn't picked Palin as a running mate simply so he could try to slip a quick one past the Hilary supporters and other women in the US and try to get their votes because he chose a woman for his Vice President nominee.
His whole campaign has become a joke and all he can do is try to slander Obama and throw out constant lies and be constantly negative. So much for that "respectful and positive campaign I'm going to run" that McCain claimed he'd do. Even other high ranking Republicans are coming out against McCain, some even saying he should fire his entire staff and start over.
McCain's a joke, his campaign is a joke, and the Republican party has become a joke.

jneill7854,
It is quite telling that you did not list FREEDOM. Moderation? Of what, alcohol consumption in America? How about a moderation of Obama the Socialist Wonder Boy appearances on my television--like an occasional speech from the Senate floor and not the White House.
How tolerant and moderate of you to call Wendy ignorant and stupid. Didthe irony of your posts even strike you like a V8 slap to the forehead? As a worldy, sophisticated, tolerant, intellectual, multiculturalist liberal you DID think that your posts were absurd. Right? Right? Fool.

Education Rick:
You have no need to worry. The notoriously liberal public school teachers will be sure to properly indoctinate their pupils by reciting Democrat talking points in class. McCain doesn't have to be in your town for them to perform their daily indoctrination sessions.
Hungarian Luddite: You seem to be insecure and sensitive. Who said you were an uneducated hick? You do hold nonsensical positions and make arguments that are not grounded by facts, but without you and people of your ilk there would be no Democrat party. There have always been and there will always be liberals around to make us stare in wide wonder, incredulous, astonished, exasperated that they actually believe what they say.
OUT.

I myself attended the rally, thought it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Everything went well as for the last minute notice. I was in between candidates up until I attended this rally. I now know I am NOT voting for senator McCain. He must think he doesn't have a chance since he has to sit there and continuously bash Obama, i mean come on don't you have any self dignity? Seems after every single point he made, he had a comment/scrutinize Obama. Obama doesn't do that to McCain. Does he think that campaign tactic actually works? I think more or less it just makes him look like a complete idiot! I think hes not confident enough in his abilities as what he would be able to do as our next president. And who else would sit there and shower his wife with tons of compliments- I mean come on- she is a beautiful woman but It didnt need to be taken to that extreme and then on top of it bragging about how his wife's family owns a beer distillery.. sounds like someone i want as commander in chief!! It makes him sound like beauty is just everything we are looking for in a 1st lady.. it just makes him sound like just a boastful pig, thats all. So to sum it up, a HOT HEADED, BOASTFUL, and not to mention ARROGANT candidate, just what the USA needs in a presidential hopeful!

As a former Defiance resident, and one who attended the old Defiance High School, it was interesting to see Defiance in the news today. But remember folks, Defiance was visited by Richard M. Nixon in either 1966 or 67. I remember it well because he stayed at a house that was then the residence of the Defiance College president on E. High Street that had been owned by Dr. John U. Fauster Jr. (He and his father Dr. John U. Fauster Sr founded the Defiance Clinic) I was 13 or 14 at the time and lived on Elliott Lane when Nixon visited. I well remember because I was actually in the side yard to the east of that house, trying to catch a bird, when Nixon came out.
