You don't have to be a news junkie to know how bad the job market is. There are plenty of jobs, even in a bad economy like this, if you are willing to move to where the jobs are. There are companies in other states doing very well and adding to their payrolls. But there are just as many companies stuggling financially to stay in business. Some of them are family owned. But when you have a house and kids, packing up and moving is not that simple anymore.
Some unemployed people have become so frustrated with the job market, they have given up looking for work until the economy improves. Many companies are cutting employees with multiple college degrees and years of professional work experience along with temp service workers and using minimal staffing to run the company. Employees still working have to do more work on tighter deadlines and smaller budgets.
The retail service industry(i.e.), restaurants, big box stores, convenience stores, supermarkets, specialty and department stores have been a reliable source of jobs. But even the retail trade has tightened its purse strings. Franchise and independent retail stores are losing business because the demographics of their neighborhoods have changed. In some neighborhoods there are more vancant houses than occupied houses.
These types of buisnesses used to have "open door" hiring policies. Changes in corporate hiring policies, state and federal labor laws and high turnover rates caused these companies to do personality testing as part of the application process. Discount retailers that are open 24/7 won't even talk to an applicant, unless the applicant is willing to work anytime day or night, putting the company before themselves and their families.
Discount retailers that participate in certain welfare programs get federal and state tax credits for hiring these welfare recipients. But after the bureaucracy does its job and the company gets its tax credits, the welfare recipients are fired and the company finds other welfare recipients to do it all over again. In the low wage, low skill general labor job market, there has to be something special about you that makes you a priority hire for those jobs.
Defiance is still a small town with a small town economy. Even though Defiance is growing in population and housing, new business development and job growth are not growing with the population. Young adults(the 20 to 30 somethings), who grew up in small towns, leave Ohio because after high school or college they have no reason to stay. Especially college graduates who attended out of state colleges. International students attending American colleges and universities, will either, stay in America and establish careers and businesses contributing to America's economic growth, or they go home to grow the economy of their home country.
If there is one thing the job market lives on it's favoritism. Do you know of anyone you can use to cash in a favor for an interview in that company? Employees try to cash in on recruiting bonuses by recommending family, friends and other acquaintance's for job openings. The person recommended still has to be the right person for the job and be willing to stay on that job and with that company more than a year.
People that grow up in small towns and move to larger cities must be able to handle the challenges and difficulties of a larger more competitive job market. While living in Columbus I did not have the support network I needed that would have helped me progress and succeed academically and professionally. Because of these difficulties, I had to come back home and I am still having these difficulties because no one knows me. I have been unemployed since May 2003 and do not expect to work the rest of my life.

Dhoover-
I do not have anger or personal life issues. Thank you for your concern though. Oh and I AM a very driven person, thus how I got to where I am today.
Sir or Ma'am (I do respect my elders) I'm sorry that I can not relate to your job situation problems. You say you were gone for 10 years...because you were in prison or what? And really a place told you to NEVER apply for a job with them?? That sounds ridiculous. Have you ever applied for a job with a temp agency? They hire people every day!
I am offended by you thinking that the only way us working people got our jobs is because we knew someone on the inside. Do you honestly think that me or my coworkers couldn't get a job based on our own talents and abilities?
I am not angry at you nor do I think that I'm better than most people. I wish you good luck with your job hunt, as you've pointed out there are jobs to be had. Too bad you're just not getting them. Maybe it's your inexperience or job history (or lack thereof).
Oh and no I'm not originally from Defiance and you don't know my parents. My father was a highschool drop-out with countless dead end jobs and my mother had me out of highschool. She now lives off of assistance from the government. Because of my life experiences it's made me work harder and strive to be a better WORKING adult.

I would have written sooner but I have been working the job market looking for a job. You have some anger management and emotional issues going on. Love life doesn't love you anymore? I can see why. You are obviously a very ego driven person. You believe you are better than most people are. The difficulties I am having may someday be the same difficulties you will have. You are not God's gift to whatever career goals you have. There is always someone better qualified than you are; who can do the job better than you can and will give themselves to the company more willingly than you will. Someone may take a chance on you to see if you can handle the stress and pressure. They won't give you time to get used to the job, either you can do it or you can't.
You said that I can't find work because no one knows me is crap.
You said that I expect a company to surpass someone else to give me a job.
I only ask for equal consideration, as would any applicant. The job market lives on favoritism. Would any of your college classmates recommend you to a company? Would you recommend any of them? There are recruiting bonuses at stake. For a college student that is tuition money. I was gone for ten years. All the business people I knew have died or retired. Businesses in this town come and go every year. I do not have a vehicle so I either walk or ride bicycle. I have been guest worshiping at other churches around town. Whenever I talk to parishioners at those churches they never ask me about work or how I'm doing in life. I only remind them that "I see you walking or riding your bike everywhere.' I get the same reaction when I'm out shopping. No one ever offers to recommend me to their bosses, or their company's h/r department. No one at my home church has ever offered this either. After getting back to work I would gladly recommend someone I know. Someone does me that kind of favor I always return it.
You said you graduated DHS in 2003. You would have been born in 1985. Unless your parents moved here from another town or state I should know them. I probably went to school with them. I graduated DHS in 1979. I'm part of your parents generation not yours. I have more work experience than you have and I have been to college. That you are working full time and going to school is good for you. The company you work for is looking at you as a career prospect depending on what your major is. But they also know you may move on after graduating.
I have never asked for, don't want, don't need sympathy or pity. The only thing I want to do for now is go back to work and have a life. Your anger at me is a waste of time as are you. I have a suggestion for you. Create a new business. Create new jobs. Buy an abandoned business building. You can hire me to manage it for you.
I came home from Columbus Ohio in October 2005. These are the businesses I have applied to, that have had advertised job openings but never interviewed me.
Store manager Subway restaurants. 3 times.
Store manager Burger King: twice.
Store manager Arby's: twice.
East of Chicago Pizza Company. Bought the former JB Shakers night club building and closed their northtowne mall location. Told me in a phone call I did not have the experience they were looking for.
Luca Pizza De Roma: took over east of chicago's mall location. Called the company, sent resume and cover letter to corporate office in Indiana long before any construction work had started on store location. Scheduled meetings, talked to franchised developer, talked to store manager, and when it came time for them to fulfill promises made they made for interview they walked out on me.
Meijer: Have applied 3 times a year since coming home. Worked at a Meijer store in Columbus. No problem getting hired. Store had constant turnover problems. Can't get interviewed at local store no matter what.
Wal Mart. When store management was interviewing for opening crew I was rejected because on the written application you had to indicate if you wanted them to contact present employers. Since I did not have one I left it blank but told them they could call anyone they wanted to. I was rejected on a technicality. Have reapplied 3 times since but still ignored. They don't take written resumes.
KMART: 3 times since coming home. Left many messages with mangers to call me back, never heard from anyone. Since store is closing, doesn't matter anymore.
Menards: No advertised openings applied for but have applied 3 times since coming home. I know they have had plenty of turnover. Lowes home improvement store: same.
Aldies: 3 times.
Fifth Third bank: had a teller (csr) position open. Decided to use hard copies of resume and cover letter to apply for the job. Branch manager sent them and a letter back to me telling me never to apply with them again.
First Federal Bank: has had teller (csr), two help desk positions applied for. Suspect that one application package was destroyed and one was lost before it got to h/r.
State Bank: 2 csr's, one clerical, one technical position. Nothing happened.
Defiance College: 3 positions. Records and registration, maintenance, switchboard op. Nothing happened.
Kirk and Blum (pronounced BLOOM): looking for a shipping receiving/inventory clerk. They took three weeks (from time I applied for the job) to decide to use a present employee instead of hiring outside. Found out by phone call. But they didn't plan on telling me that.
Defiance Metal products: twice has had similar position open. Nothing happened.
Defiance City and County clerical positions. Microfilm and records office. City utility billing office. Municipal Court clerks office. Environmental services office.
Former Sterling store became Circle K. Four times. Nothing.
Defiance Clinic: twice. Non medical clerical position closed same day applied for it. Told h/r department to consider me for 2nd clerical position that opened same day, nothing happened.
Crescent News: 3 times. Classified ad positions. I was told by a C-N employee I know that the third time was a publishing error. Crescent News never admitted that.
Many other businesses I have applied to only once, either because of an advertised opening or I did a cold call.
This is my score card so far.

I'm sorry about your troubles, but to say you can not find work because no one knows you is crap- plain & simple CRAP! Yes the economy is in bad shape right now & jobs in Defiance & surrounding area are pretty hard to find, but I find your attitude absoultely ridiculous. It seems like you expect some company to just surpass any other willing and able person to give YOU a job. See that's the problem with today's society & this generation. Everyone is looking for a handout! It doesn't work that way. Get your butt off the couch and go find a job. People do it everyday. And you don't have to know people or have a masters degree to find a descent job. I know this from experience. I'm a 2003 DHS graduate & work full-time for a reputable company, while still attending college for my bachelors degree. If you EXPECT to be jobless for the rest of your life, then you will be. Quit waiting for the pity party and help yourself.

I am in the IT field and knew there were not many jobs in NW Ohio. I moved to Chicago, spent about 3 months looking for a job, and finally got a job in the Sears Tower supporting a Lawfirm. I was able to nearly triple my income in moving from NW Ohio to Chicago. I love NW Ohio and hope to return someday, but the jobs are just not there.
