SHERWOOD -- An Edgerton boy drowned Saturday afternoon in a pond near here while attending a family function.
Jack Martenies, 10, Edgerton, was pronounced dead at Defiance Regional Medical Center.
According to Defiance County Sheriff Dave Westrick, law enforcement and rescue personnel were called to a pond for a possible drowning at the corner of Openlander and Buckskin roads at 3:42 p.m.
"The youth was last seen by friends and family playing at the pond's edge," said Westrick.
Rescue personnel from Sherwood Fire Department and EMS reportedly searched the pond until divers from the sheriff's office took over.
The body was recovered by sheriff's divers at 5:03 p.m. and transported by Sherwood EMS to DRMC, said Westrick.
Assisting in the search were a Life Flight helicopter crew and Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers.
