There's help for those without health insurance or medications not covered by insurance.
The United Way of Defiance County is again offering free of charge the FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards to county residents.
The cards lower the cost of medicine an average of 35 percent. The cards offer discounts on all prescription drugs, but cannot be used with other prescription cards.
There are no age or income restrictions to obtain the card.
This is the second year the program has been offered in the county. Last year there were 394 claims submitted for discounts through the program. The average amount saved was $13.30 per claim.
"People are using this in the county," said Carrie Wetstein, executive director of the United Way. "People are benefiting from it."
The cards are accepted at several pharmacies throughout the county including: Defiance Clinic, Hicksville Pharmacy, Kmart, Kroger, Chief Market Square, Meijer, Wal-Mart and Unique prescriptions.
Individuals present the card to the pharmacy and pay either the discounted prize or the pharmacy's retail price, whichever is lower. Cards can be used as often as needed and copies of the card can be used.
The card is available at the United Way offices and at other locations throughout the county. For more information or to download a card, visit www.familywize.org.
