Pets being abandoned with home foreclosure crisis.

March 18, 2008

As we all continue to deal with a crappy economy as best we can, there are those among us who depend on us to take care of them, love them and not leave them behind even in bad economic times. They are our pets. Foreclosure pets are becoming more common as home owners lose their properties to foreclosure.

Foreclosure pets are being recognized as another victim of the home foreclosure crisis. Some home owners will do the right thing and try to find a home for their pet(s). But some pet owners will just leave the pet(s) behind for someone else to find. Real estate agents, who have to inspect foreclosed houses are finding pets still in the house along with other material items the former home owner left behind.

Real estate agents, law enforcement, animal shelter workers, pet care service providers and even neighbors are now forced to deal with a situation that the former home owner was supposed to take responsibility for. If you are a home owner facing foreclosure and have one or more pets please take responsibility and find other housing for your pet(s).

Pet care service providers such as animal shelters and kennels have limited space and resources. Especially shelters or humane societies that rely on public and private funding.

The news media has been reporting on the foreclosure pet problem. But it also depends on where you live. Some areas of America are doing better economically than others. The ABC network news program NIGHTLINE aired a story on their March 13th edition concerning the pet foreclosure problem in Dayton, Ohio. Defiance county is having its own home foreclosure crisis but so far (unless I've been missing something) I have not seen or heard any local media coverage about a local pet foreclosure problem.

As the recession gets worse and we all continue to deal with our own economic issues, please don't make your pet(s) a victim of a situation that can be solved. Even if you are now experiencing or will face home foreclosure do the right thing for your pet(s).
