March 4, 2008

EDON -- A Montpelier couple was killed and two others were injured in a head-on collision Monday morning in Williams County.

Marian Bacon, 74, and her husband, Harry Bacon, 81, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Williams County Coroner Dr. Kevin Park.

Caytlian Whaley, 2, Reading, Mich., a passenger in the second vehicle, was listed in "critical" condition at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis this morning. Her mother, Courtney Whaley, 21, Reading, was admitted to the University of Toledo Medical Center, Toledo, though a condition update was unavailable this morning.

According to troopers of the Defiance post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, at 10:15 a.m., Marian Bacon was driving south on Ohio 49, approximately four miles north of Edon, when her vehicle traveled left of center and hit the northbound Whaley vehicle head-on.

Courtney Whaley was taken by Williams County EMS to Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers, Bryan, and from there was transported to the Toledo facility. Her daughter was taken by air ambulance to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne and then by ambulance to the Indianapolis hospital.

All the drivers and passengers were wearing safety belts and the 2-year-old was secured in a car safety seat, troopers reported.

The crash remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the Williams County Sheriff's Office, Ohio Department of Transportation and Florence Township Fire Department.
