ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Dr. Russell A. Jones, 75, St. Joseph, Mo., died Friday, June 27, 2008. He was born April 14, 1933, in Kenton. In 1955, he married Eva Joann Bercaw, who survives. He received his bachelor's degree from Campbellsville College, in Kentucky, his MRE degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and his Ph.D from Ohio State University in 1968. At OSU, he was a fellow in the Department of Higher Education, and was dean of students and professor at Urbana University for six years. He pastored churches in Ohio, including Defiance, and Kentucky for 20 years. He served 10 years as a denominational minister in Ohio, southern California, Hawaii, Arizona, Nevada, and Baja California. He spent 13 years at Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Kan., chaired the Department of Evangelism and Church Growth, and later served as academic dean of the seminary. He retired in 1998, after which he served as interim pastor at Kenton First Baptist Church in Ohio, Stewartsville Baptist Church, Missouri, and Frederick Boulevard Baptist Church in St. Joseph, Mo. He and his wife spent six months in Russia in 1993, where he taught the first-ever Christian Studies courses at the Nizhni Novgorod University. In 1997 and 1998, he was invited to teach at Spurgeon's College, London, England. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as an instrument flying instructor in U.S. Army Aviation from 1955-58. Also surviving are three daughters, Lydia Zuidema and Julie (Randy) Jones-McGohan of St. Joseph, Mo., and Jenny (Pastor Daryl) Wingerd, Weston, Mo.; and 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death was a son, Bradley. Services were held Monday at Frederick Boulevard Baptist Church, St. Joseph. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Williamstown, Ohio, Cemetery. A celebration service will be at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Kenton Baptist Church. Preferred memorials are to Salvation Army, Hands of Hope Hospice, St. Joseph, Mo., and the Gideon Bible Society. Comments
