Arthur Long

FLORIDA -- Arthur L. Long, 91, Florida, Ohio, died Monday morning, November 2, 2009, at 12:45 a.m. at CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center, Defiance.

He was born in Paulding County on December 2, 1917. He was the son of the late Charles and Zelma (Fitzwater) Long. Art was married in New Haven, Indiana, on February 24, 1946, to Helen Schaffer, and they celebrated their 63rd anniversary this year.

Surviving are his wife, Helen; son, Leonard (Rose Ann) Long of Independence; son, Lloyd (Barbara) Long of Napoleon; daughter, Linda (Dave) Lulfs of Defiance; and daughter, Judy (Keith) Rose of Napoleon. Also surviving are two brothers, Lowell "Shorty" Long of Archbold and Ralph Long of Sherwood; and 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, four stepgrandchildren and five great-stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Larry; a grandchild; a great-grandchild; and also, brothers, Chauncey and James Long.

Art served in the European Theater during World War II in the 56th Armored Infantry Battalion, 12th Armored Division. He received five Purple Hearts from his wounds that he received and also two Bronze Star medals. Art received the 2008 Ohio Disabled Veteran Award of the Year in Columbus, July 2008; the Hometown Hero of the Year, April 2008; Florida Citizen of the Year, 1999; and was a life member of the DAV, Purple Heart and VFW. In 2007, he went to Washington, D.C., on the first Honor Flight.

He farmed until 1960, and also did construction work. Art worked at Campbell's Soup Company and retied in 1980, after 23 years. He was a volunteer fireman for four decades for Florida's Fire Department. After retirement, Art engaged in many years of woodworking at his home, making beautiful pieces of furniture. He enjoyed his garden, fishing, and also had a love for family and friends. Art will be greatly missed by all.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. at Mast-Mock-Hoffman-Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, with a fireman's memorial service held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home, with Rev. Laura Clark officiating. Burial will be in North Mount Zion Cemetery, Putnam County.
