From staff reports

Some Defiance County poll workers reported good turnouts this morning during the early hours of voting.

Around 9:30 a.m., voting was steady at some precincts in Defiance and Henry counties.

"It's steady, very surprisingly," said a poll worker at the Defiance Eagles, polling station for Defiance precincts 2-A and 2-C as well as Defiance Township A. "Typically in the off year, it's light, but this year it has been real steady."

"We've been steady ever since 6:30 a.m.," said a poll worker at Defiance's First Baptist Church, polling station for precincts 1-H and 4-B. "Actually, I'm impressed. We didn't expect this steady of a flow."

From Hicksville came reports of steady activity as well, although workers at Hicksville Presbyterian Church can pinpoint one reason: Their location has more voters as the village's precinct D has been combined with precinct B.

"It's been fairly busy," said a poll worker. "It seems pretty high to me, but it could be because they combined two precincts into one."

In Defiance County's mid-section, voters from Ney, Farmer Township and Washington Township were casting ballots at Sonrise Community Church, just west of Ney, but not in large numbers.

"It's been fair," said one poll worker.

Meanwhile, at Defiance's Family Christian Center, where voters from Defiance precinct 4-D and South Richland make their choices, turnout was reported as "very steady and good."

In Henry County, board of elections director Grace Speiser said this morning that state issues are driving voter turnout. "The precincts I've talked to this morning have been steady," she said, explaining that more than 1,000 absentee or early voting ballots were turned in at her office prior to Election Day.
