PAULDING -- Tanzanian artists were in northwest Ohio in October through the Great Lakes Consortium for Training and Development program. The goal was to create a leadership team of young Tanzanian female artists who will pursue the challenge of developing respect and tolerance for women and cultivate leadership in society.

The consortium also sent a delegation of northwest Ohio artists to Tanzania to help in training a networking with the artists.

Harieth Kagangule Rwamula, a self-employed woodcarver and shop owner from Bagamoyo, and Schlastica Malecela from Dodoma, a woodcarver in training, visited the Paulding area on Oct. 17-19. Mike and Sandy Dobbelaere of Oakwood showed the women the area that weekend.

The Tanzanian women also attended Paulding Exempted Village Schools on Oct. 19 to talk to the students about their art, life and schools, visiting the classrooms of several teachers.

The guests had a slide show presentation and art work on display including wood carvings, batikis and jewelry. The jewelry was created with found objects including coconut shells and seeds, along with glass beads. They explained that village children gather seeds from native plants and sell them to jewelry artists. The art is then sold to tourists visiting the area.
