HOLGATE -- The superintendent of Holgate Local Schools stepped down Monday after 16 months on the job.

Tony Meinerding, 49, who took over as superintendent in May 2008, resigned his post effective immediately during Monday's board of education meeting.

No official reason was given for the resignation, but the five members of the school board released a statement after voting to accept the resignation:

"The Holgate Local Board of Education believes it is in the best interest of both the Board of Education and Mr. Meinerding to end our professional association," the statement said. "The Holgate Local Board takes seriously its responsibilities to students, staff and district residents. The board will continue to act with these responsibilities as its guiding principles. The board wishes Mr. Meinerding well in future professional endeavors."

The board of education indicated that Darren Jenkins, superintendent of the Northwest Ohio Educational Service Center, will serve as Holgate's interim superintendent. He will work with the board to help find a permanent replacement for Meinerding.

Meinerding, who took over for former superintendent James Reiter, was a former principal at Bradford Junior/Senior High School in Bradford and was named principal of Wellston High School in Wellston in 2006.
