WAUSEON -- A fund-raising walk is set for 2-year-old William Burton, of Bryan, who is being treated at Sara's Garden in Wauseon for mild brain damage. The Walk for Will's Sake is set for Oct. 17, at Sara's Garden, located at 620 W. Leggett St. Registration for the walk begins at 9 a.m. Participants who collect $35 or more in pledges will receive a T-shirt. Tours of the facility will be held after the walk is concluded. All proceeds of the walk will be given to Sara's Garden to help with the cost of Burton's treatment. Burton, who is the son of Robert and Angie Burton, suffered complications after being born in July 2007 that resulted in mild brain damage and delays in his motor development. He is receiving hyperbaric oxygen treatment and conductive education (CE) at Sara's Garden. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment helps the body recover faster when the body's cells receive 100 percent oxygen. When cells are deprived of oxygen, they either die or become dormant. Oxygen can revive dormant cells. CE is based on the idea that despite damage, the nervous system still has the ability to form neural connections. The earlier a child receive CE, the greater the chance for improvement. Since he has been receiving these services, Burton is able to sit up unsupported and his hand-eye coordination has shown great improvement. He supports himself in the crawling position and is starting to move his hands and legs without help. When he holds on to a ladder, he can support his body weight on his legs. With continued services from Sara's Garden, it is hoped that he will be able to learn to crawl and walk on his own. Sara's Garden assists persons who need hyperbaric oxygen treatment for wound healing, strokes, cerebral palsy, brain injury, sports injuries, Lyme disease, RSD, etc. For more information about Sara's Garden, call 419-335-SARA, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday through Friday.
