TOLEDO -- Teachers from Van Wert, Paulding, Defiance, Williams, Henry, Fulton, Hancock, Lucas, Seneca, Sandusky, Ottawa, Putnam and Wood counties are invited to attend a workshop "Immigration and Migration" on Oct. 22 at the Toledo/Lucas County Public Library. Seminar times are 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. This seminar will detail the cultural traditions immigrants incorporated into their new lives in American. Learn more about the culture of northwest Ohio and the cultural influenced in the regional food, music, dancing and holidays. Participants will explore resources for teaching about immigration and culture. Teachers will learn more about using primary sources in the classroom, area educational resources, and hear a lecture by an esteemed expert on immigration and culture. All materials and supplies including resource CD's and books for classroom use will be provided. The workshop is free and sponsored by the Western Buckeye, the Ohio Historical Society, Sauder Village and Ashland University through the Teaching American History grant entitled Northwest PEERS. The grant is a three-year project, funded specifically for professional development for social studies teachers in the northwest Ohio region. It is designed to encourage teachers to deepen and broaden their knowledge of American History, increase the quality of instruction, increase teacher use of primary source materials and improve student achievement. Content for all of the professional development series will focus on making a connection between local and regional historical events and American historical events.
