ELIDA -- The Defiance boys golf team claimed the 2009 Western Buckeye League crown, outplaying the field by 11 strokes to clinch its first title since 1998.
"I feel great for the kids, they earned it," explained DHS coach Steve Maxey. "We used all four sophomore's scores and they handled the pressure well. They played with their heads and made smart decisions."
Will Paulus of St. Marys earned medalist honors with a 75. Josh Scott of Defiance was runner-up in a playoff with a 76, while Blake Doidge of Van Wert followed in third with a 76. Doidge was also named WBL Player of the Year.
Also earning first-team honors were Henry Weisgerber and Jacob Moore of Defiance, Logan Yelton of St. Marys, Ian Haidle of Elida, Phil Gabel and Kaleb Coil of Wapakoneta, Cody Ciminillo and Johnny Ellis of Shawnee and Darin Waterman of Celina. Corbin Stykemain of Defiance was named honorable mention.
