Numerous candidates and issues met the election filing deadline Thursday in Defiance County. All filings remain unofficial until certified by the election board, which meets Tuesday at 12 p.m.

The only countywide issue is a 1-mill, five-year renewal and decrease for E-911 services and communication. This is a reduction of .2-mills from the present 1.2 mills.

Candidate filings produced several interesting notes. For example, all five school boards will have a contested race in November.

Ayersville Local residents will select two new board members among three newcomers -- Robert Cooper III, John Delano and Danny Wagner. The top two will replace Craig McKibben and Lisa Brown, who did not file for re-election.

Four board seats will be determined for Central Local Schools. Incumbent Mark Baden, Jennifer Bergman, Patricia Garrigus (appointed when Jeff Ankney resigned) and Vicki Rhodes will vie for the three open four-year terms, while Rob Miller is unopposed for the unexpired two-year term. Incumbents Jilene Richards and Mickey Schwarzbeck did not file for re-election.

Three seats are up for grabs on the Defiance City Board of Education, including a two-year unexpired term. Robert Carpenter Jr., Paul Ferree and incumbents Mark Klein and Stephen Snavely will be locked in a four-way race for the two four-year terms. The two-year unexpired term will pit Wesley Moats (appointed earlier this year to fill the unexpired term of S.G. Brugler) against Barney Eureste.

The Hicksville Exempted Village school board race features five candidates for three seats. Susan Gonwick, Stephanie Karacson-Mazur, Dennis Vetter and incumbents Karen Schmidt and Robert Weatherhead will vie for the four-year terms. Incumbent Michael Cleland did not file a petition.

In the Northeastern Local School District, incumbent Michael Boff, Julie Burkholder, Ken Keller and incumbent Ronald Meyer will compete for three open seats. Another incumbent, Kraig Beilharz, did not file for re-election.

Turning to the municipal races, Joe Eureste (D-inc.), Michael Ketcham (R), David Plant (D), Howard Tropepe (D) and Ellen Upp (R-inc.) will vie for three Defiance City Council-At-Large seats.

There will also be a contested election for Sherwood council, with Robyn Crites, Wes Hall, incumbent James Hohenberger, incumbent A.J. Minton and Michael Sudholtz seeking to be among the top four elected.

The Hicksville and Ney council races each have four candidates for four seats.

Meanwhile, 10 of 12 township trustee races are contested. The largest slate is in Noble Township, with five candidates vying for two four-years terms and three more candidates competing for an unexpired two-year term.

Six candidates are also on the ballot for two township seats in both Delaware and Mark Townships.

The only new levy request is for Richland Township, where voters will decide a 2-mill additional levy for a continuing period of time for fire and rescue services.

Defiance city voters will decide four proposed charter amendments, including the elimination of term limits for the park board to correspond with other city boards and commissions.

Three of the issues are Sunday liquor sales options with two in Defiance city precinct 3C and the other in city precinct 3A.

A list of filings which met Thursday's deadline appears below. Candidates for municipal elections that are partisan (Defiance and Hicksville) were required to file for this fall's general election by May 5, but they are also listed.

Write-in candidates may file their petitions for any of these positions until Sept. 2.
