BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Bryan High School product Chris Carpenter was the tough-luck loser for the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs Double-A affiliate) in a 2-0 setback to the Birmingham Barons on Thursday. Carpenter, who was making his second start for the Smokies since being called up from Single-A Daytona, allowed an earned run on one hit while striking out five in four innings. The former Kent State standout threw 39 of his 66 pitches for strikes and dropped his ERA to 5.14. Comments
