A new watershed group is organizing within the Western Lake Erie Basin that will address water quality concerns throughout the Upper Maumee River Watershed.

Beginning at the confluence of the St. Joseph and St. Mary's Rivers in Fort Wayne and flowing approximately 45 miles northeast to the mouth of the Tiffin River near Defiance, the Upper Maumee River Watershed encompasses more than 250,000 acres (392 square miles) throughout Allen and DeKalb counties in Indiana and Defiance and Paulding counties in Ohio.

Issues being addressed by the group include flood control and damage reduction, water supply, sediment and erosion reduction, water quality, recreation, fish and wildlife habitat and commercial/recreational navigation.

These issues and associated opportunities will be addressed in a watershed management plan that the group anticipates having drafted in the next two years.

This plan will inventory areas of concern and will spell out specific best management practices that can be utilized to improve these conditions.

Other opportunities within the group exist for volunteer water quality monitoring, educational outreach, stream cleanup projects and implementation of best management practices.

The next meeting of the Upper Maumee River Watershed group will be Aug. 13 at the Woodburn Missionary Church, 5108 Bull Rapids Road, Woodburn, Ind. For more information, visit the website at: www.uppermaumeewatershed.com.
