ATHENS -- Sandusky ended the Napoleon River Bandits' run at the American Legion state tournament in Athens with a 10-0 triumph over the local legion squad on Saturday in the championship finals.

Sandusky, who also won state a year ago in Athens, forced the River Bandits to navigate through the losers' bracket after beating Napoleon 4-2 on the opening day of the tournament on Monday.

Napoleon needed to beat Sandusky twice on Saturday to win the state title.

Sandusky plated a pair of runs in each of the first two frames on Saturday to take an early 4-0 advantage.

University of Toledo bound hurler Mike Hamman needed very little run-support for Sandusky against the Bandits. He fanned seven and walked three while only allowing an Eric Sims (Fairview) single in the seventh.

Sandusky added to its lead in the sixth with one run and then invoked the mercy rule in the seventh by scoring a handful of times.

On Friday, Napolen earned a spot in the championship by downing Portsmouth and Alliance.

Anthony Kidston (North Central) went four innings on the mound to garner the victory against Portsmouth.

Trey Meyer roped four singles to lead the Bandits at the plate.

Austin Bower (Patrick Henry) added a pair of singles to go along with a double and drove in three runs while Kyle Niermann stroked two singles and Mark Sebring (Defiance) doubled.

In their victory over Alliance, Niermann tossed 71/3 innings to capture the win on the hill.

He also had another big game at the plate with three singles while Kidston had a single and double to drive in five runs. Bower also had a single and double while Quinn Nofziger (Pettisville) and Meyer each chipped in with two singles apiece.

The River Bandits finished the season with the second most wins in the clubs history by going 48-13. The 2004 squad collected 55 victories.
