Defiance knocked out of state tourney

TALLMADGE -- The Defiance Little League 11-12 all-star sanctioned baseball was eliminated from the Little League State Tournament after falling to Hardscrabble 4-1 on Monday in losers' bracket action at Tallmadge.

G. Peffley held Defiance in check, scattering seven hits while allowing just one run in the complete-game win for Hardscrabble. Peffley also singled and hit a pair of solo homers in the win. Adam Schaffer led Defiance with a single and double, while David Hoffman finished with two singles.

"The Peffley kid really kept us in check today," said Defiance manager Dan Schaffer. "But, it was easier to walk off the field today knowing that the kids did everything they could to win the game and nothing to lose it. It was hard to lose, but the kids played so well and they had nothing to hang their heads about."

Although disappointed, Schaffer came away impressed with the teams at state, and with how his team handled itself at Tallmadge.

"In the four years I've been to state with this team starting when they were nine, this is the toughest tournament I've seen," said Schaffer. "There's so much talent here and the teams are very even.

"I'm very proud of the boys because they handled themselves with class and character," added Schaffer. "It was an honor to be their coach, and I know a lot of these guys have a lot of baseball ahead of them."
