By DARLENE PRINCE A new garden club in Defiance, called "Just Add Water," is carrying on the long-time tradition of the former Twin Rivers Garden Club by continuing the "Garden of the Month" award. Chosen as the first "Garden of the Month" for July by the Just Add Water garden club is the colorful garden of Defiance city resident Peggy Miller. Miller and her husband, James, live at 200 Glenwood Drive, off South Clinton Street. Neighbors and those who drive by the Miller residence are treated to a glorious display of blooming perennials and annuals intermixed with ornamental grasses and evergreens. Flower beds alongside the driveway and the front of the yard hold monarda, daisies, black-eyed Susans, pink and white coneflowers, asparagus, sedum, Russian sage, many varieties of day lilies, coreopsis and yarrow. A Knock Out rose lends color to the area while huge hosta plants grow happily in the shade of a tree. Petunias, impatiens and other annuals add a touch of color. Next to the road, a tall stand of zebra grass waves in the breeze. On the east side of the yard, a wooden bench arbor rests in the shade of a beautiful maple tree, providing a quiet spot to rest or read. Other perennial flowers that are planted in the beds include: agapanthus, asters, astilbe, bleeding hearts, balloon flowers, clematis, daffodils, globe thistle, irises, mums, peonies, and tulips. Grasses include miscanthus gracillimus, feather reed and miscanthus morning light. She also has lilac bushes, forsythia, rose of Sharon, viburnum and several varieties of hydrangea, Miller has lived at her home since 1970. She said she likes to use a lot of mulch with her plants. She added, "The work put into our gardens is so worth it because of the pleasure it gives so many people to see the beauty of the many kinds of flowers. "One lady who stops by occasionally told me, 'When I sit here in the beauty of your flowers, it is so peaceful and all the unpleasant things are forgotten for a while.'" The Just Add Water garden club invites the public to nominate a garden for the Garden of the Month award. The nomination form is on this page and often runs on the Lifestyle page. The club meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call 419-782-2337, or e-mail at defiancegardenclub@gmail.com. Comments
