By DARLENE PRINCE The first clinic for Defiance-area residents who are interested in obtaining family planning services will be held on Tuesday at the Defiance County Health Department. Laura Coressel, director of nursing at the Defiance health department, said, "Clinics for family planning services will be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. In July, that is on July 14 and 28. The Henry County Health Department will be offering the personnel and the Defiance health department is offering the location for these services." The services are being offered to replace family planning services in Defiance County that had been provided by Women and Family Services, which closed in May because of funding problems. Due to funding issues involving state grants that had been going to Women and Family Services, the two health departments are sharing the cost of providing the services. Coressel said as the number of participants in the clinics increases, clinics will be added to take place four times a month. Pam Pflum, director of nursing at the Henry County Health Department, said, "We are offering several services at these clinics. It will not all be reproductive services that are offered as we are offering assistance to women in their 60s, 70s and 80s. Men can also use some of our services." Services offered at the clinics are physical examinations including a pelvic exam, pap smear and clinical breast exam; STD testing and treatment for males and females; pregnancy testing, counseling and referral; Level 1 infertility testing; IUD insertion and removal; HIV testing; laboratory testing as ordered by a clinician; abstinence education; and birth control including oral contraceptives, contraceptive patch, depo provera injection, diaphragm, natural family planning instruction, condoms, IUDs, vaginal ring and emergency contraception. Costs of services are based on an income-based, sliding-fee scale. Medicaid and some insurances are accepted. No one will be denied service due to an inability to pay. Pflum said the Henry County Health Department is asking patients to call the toll-free number, 1-877-591-3050, and schedule an appointment. Comments
