HICKSVILLE -- In an event aimed at honoring the memory of their father, two brothers decided to show support of their mother as well -- with a haircut. During an auction at events for Linus Slattery Memorial Golf Tournament earlier this month, Terry and Tony Slattery had an unusual request for the auctioneer. They asked them to auction off their hair to show support for their mother, Mary Slattery. She is battling breast cancer and receives chemotherapy. "I had no idea," Mary Slattery said of her sons, Terry and Tony, shaving their heads. "I just thought 'I have some crazy kids that would do this for their mom and dad,' " she said. "I didn't know what to think, of course, I got tearful and I thought what a great thing to do." A collection bucket was put down and individuals were asked for free-will donations. All proceeds from the Linus Slattery Memorial Golf Tournament benefit hospice, its auxiliary and the Angel Foundation. They raised $800 with the haircuts. Then the brothers asked if others wanted to join them by getting the same hairdos. At the end of the night 15 men shaved their heads. "It was something," Mary Slattery said. Approximately $26,500 in proceeds were raised during this year's Linus Slattery Memorial Golf Tournament. Comments
