Defiance County commissioners discussed the possibility of a dirt track for radio controlled vehicles on county property during their Thursday meeting. Greg Timmons presented a proposal to build a dirt track on Defiance's Sauers Avenue, where the county highway garage once stood. The county still owns and maintains the property. According to Commissioner Jim Harris, Timmons and his group would like to construct a track with jumps and other features, and possibly an additional oval track. They would also keep the property mowed, he said. Commissioners have referred the matter to assistant county prosecutor Russ Herman to draw up a lease, Harris explained. This likely would allow lease of the property for a nominal fee, he indicated. County officials are also checking with the city of Defiance to ensure that the use would comply with zoning laws, Harris added. Also Thursday, commissioners received an update from Jeff Ankney of the Defiance County Soil and Water Office. He said work should begin on the Colwell Ditch project in July while work continues on Black Ditch. The Hoschak Tile, Krouse Ditch and Stover Ditch projects have all been surveyed while his agency is working on design. Ankney also reported that Defiance County landowners have received $30,000 for year two of the special nitrate reduction CAP projects for Lake Erie for control drainage, wetlands and cover crops. Meanwhile, Defiance County landowners in the Lost Creek watershed in Farmer Township have received $25,000 for soluble phosphorus reduction in Lake Erie, Ankney noted. He added that the Defiance County Soil and Water Office has received 17 new grass waterway/drainage requests and sold almost 8,000 trees and 1,200 fish fingerlings this year. In other business: -- county administrator Laura Howell told commissioners that the new officers for the Family and Children First Council are Kathy Short, council chairman; Rick Edmunds, council vice chairman; and Barb Rohrs, secretary. -- commissioners attended the county planning commission meeting.
