MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (AP) -- Mackinac Island's famed Grand Hotel is now officially a green hotel, too.
State officials have named the 122-year-old, 385-room hotel a green lodging, recognizing its efforts to save energy and recycle.
Hotel heating and cooling chief Andrew McGreevy designed a system to cool 170 waterfront rooms with water heat exchangers.
The Detroit Free Press says the hotel also composts its own yard waste.
The island in the straits connecting lakes Huron and Michigan has a history of environmentalism, with its curb on motorized vehicles. Locals deposit household garbage in composting bags. The island also composts the manure from the island's horse-based transportation system.
