PAULDING -- The children are the future of the community and in Paulding County, one couple has worked hard to help shape that future.

That's why Jack and Karen Fetter of Grover Hill have been named the grand marshals of the John Paulding Days parade set for 7 p.m. June 12.

"They were nominated for their work in the community and with the community's youth," said Clip Clippinger, executive director of the Paulding Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors John Paulding Days. The chamber's board selects the grand marshals from nominations submitted by community members.

"They will represent the community very well in the parade," Clippinger said. "It was an excellent choice."

The Fetters help run Youth for Christ. Jack Fetter was the executive director of the Defiance Area YFC from 1974-96 and is its current wilderness ministry director. That ministry has reached more than 20,000 youths since 1990, and has been honored by the national Youth for Christ organization. He is also a member of the Grover Hill Ministry Association.

Karen Fetter is the teen parent director for Youth for Christ and volunteers at the Community Pregnancy Center. She also helps with the True Love Waits program in the local high school. Both are active in their church, Calvary Bible Church in Paulding.

Karen Fetter said she and her husband were surprised to hear they were named the grand marshals.

"I was very shocked," she said. "I had no idea we would even be considered. It was very shocking and very honoring." She said that both she and her husband enjoy working with the area's youths.

"We've just very much appreciated the opportunity to work with kids and share God's word," she said. "It's been a fantastic opportunity."

The Fetters have two children and several grandchildren.
