EVANSPORT -- Plans for Evansport's 175th anniversary in 2010 are beginning to take shape, the Evansport Terquasquicentennial Committee learned at its meeting at the Tiffin Township Fire Station this month. The Defiance County Genealogical Society plans to conduct two free beginning genealogy workshops in Evansport, tentatively scheduled for May and October 2010. The location and dates are yet to be determined. The genealogical society has three instructors available who will provide attendees with an introduction to researching family histories. The Stryker Area Heritage Council has created a trifold brochure on Evansport's history featuring information on the town's creation and its mills, post office, school, churches, band, industries, utilities, fire department and floods. Copies are available at the Evansport Post Office and on the SAHC website, www.strykerhistory.org. June 19, 2010, was tentatively selected for a 175th anniversary parade and street fair/street dance. Items of local historic interest will be displayed in the Evansport United Methodist Church fellowship hall, with historic presentations/speakers in the sanctuary. In conjunction with these activities, the Tiffin Township Fire Department will host an arts and crafts show at the fire station. The committee continued discussion of souvenir items to mark Evansport's 175th anniversary including wooden replicas of a local historic structure, T-shirts and mugs. Proceeds from the sale of commemorative items will be used to offset event expenses. Plans are in the works for an Evansport-area cemetery tour that will feature site interpreters to provide the cemetery's history and information on notable people buried there. The Evansport post office staff is investigating a special postal cancellation to mark the terquasquicentennial. This special hand cancellation can be used one day only and may feature 175th anniversary artwork and text. The next meeting of the Evansport Terquasquicentennial Committee will be held at 7 p.m. June 4 at the fire station. Anyone with an interest in the Evansport area and its heritage is welcome to attend.
