Two pedestrians — one a 16-year-old — died Thursday when hit by trains in Defiance and Williams counties. The Defiance post of the Ohio Highway Patrol reports that Leslie W. Wheeler, 34, Montpelier, was killed at 12:15 p.m. when he walked onto railroad tracks one mile west of Williams County Road 9 in Center Township and was hit by a train. The Defiance Police Department has yet to release the identity of the 16-year-old killed at 8 p.m. near the 2200 block of Baltimore Road. Police said this morning that the victim was a former city resident currently living in Findlay. Defiance police said the teen’s death occurred on the CSX Railroad tracks. The youth was pronounced dead at the scene by the Defiance County coroner’s office. The incident remains under investigation. According to patrol troopers, Wheeler walked onto the Norfolk and Southern Railroad tracks when he was struck and killed by an eastbound train. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Williams County coroner’s office. His remains were transported to Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers in Bryan pending an autopsy that was scheduled today in Lucas County. The train tracks were closed for approximately three hours due to the incident. The Williams County Sheriff’s Office, county coroner’s office and Norfolk and Southern Railroad are assisting with the ongoing investigation. Williams County EMS and Edgerton Fire Department assisted the patrol at the scene.
