This Mother's Day, one non-profit organization is making sure that more mothers will get the thanks and recognition they deserve. In honor of moms, Mothers & More of Defiance is sponsoring a collection called "The Power of a Purse," to provide the gift of a purse to women seeking to rebuild their lives. The Power of the Purse project was started by another Mothers & More group in southern Saratoga, N.Y., and the Defiance chapter is helping push the idea to spread across the country. Mothers & More is seeking donations of new or like-new purses for the House of Ruth, a local women's shelter. Many of these women, along with their children, have fled crisis abusive situations and find a safe place to live at the House of Ruth. Many of the residents are mothers who arrive with nothing but their children and the clothes on their backs. "We believe that a purse is symbolic of a woman's economic power, but it is also a practical everyday item that can help her feel put together," says Mothers & More chapter co-leader, Kelly Worline. "Single moms are the ones who struggle most to support their children. We want to show that we care about their endeavor to be successful and support their families." The purses will be given to the residents of the House of Ruth in time for Mother's Day. Mothers is also accepting donations of bath gels and lotions to fill the purses. Since many of the women who stay at the home have children, diapers and wipes are also needed. Donated purses may be dropped off at Defiance Development and Visitors Bureau, Indigo Spa and Body Works, The Laurels of Defiance, St. Paul's United Methodist Church and Defiance Public Library through May 5. The library will also have a book display about mothers, the issues mothers face, and a selection of books for mothers. Business owners wishing to donate services or items are encouraged to call Mothers & More at 419-782-9062, or e-mail worline@hotmail.com. All mothers are invited to the May 4 meeting of Mothers & More for a special tea in celebration of Mother's Day at the Inn on Third. Guest speaker, Marcella Ciccotelli, owner of Colorscapes, will talk about the "Top 25 easy plants for spring." Call or e-mail Worline to let her know if you plan to attend the tea. Comments
