TOLEDO -- Ryan Desgrange, a 1998 graduate of Liberty Center High School, is looking to land a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Desgrange will attempt to run the "fastest marathon in a film character costume" when he participates in the 33rd running of the Toledo Glass City Marathon on April 26. Desgrange, who now lives in Brighton, Mich., will portray the part of film star "Rocky Balboa," an American boxer in the movie series, "Rocky." Desgrange will have to run the 26.2-mile course through Toledo, Rossford, Perrysburg and Maumee with an authentic look and appearance of the great American movie hero. Guinness requires strict guidelines to all attempts at their records. Upon completion of the marathon, Desgrange will have to verify his accomplishment for Guinness through certified documentation, post media coverage and video coverage of his attempt. The current world record holder is Ian Sharman of Great Britain, who was dressed as Maximus from the movie, "Gladiator," when he ran the New Forest Marathon in three hours 22 minutes and 22 seconds on Sept. 21, 2008. Desgrange is no stranger to the world of marathon running. He won the Glass City Marathon in 2006 with a record time of two hours and 27 minutes. The 2009 Glass City Marathon will start on Summit Street in downtown Toledo at 8 a.m. More than 2,000 runners are expected to participate. Comments
