By TODD HELBERG The completion of two more sections of U.S. 24 and the beginning of another will highlight area construction projects this year on state and federal routes. Projects in the Ohio Department of Transportation's (ODOT) District I -- based in Lima -- were reviewed Wednesday during a construction kickoff media event at ODOT's Defiance garage. District I covers Defiance, Paulding and Putnam counties in the Defiance six-county area. Fulton, Henry and Williams counties are included in ODOT District II. Two sections of the U.S. 24 project scheduled to be completed this year run from Ohio 424 in Defiance to U.S. 127 and from U.S. 127 to the Indiana line. According to ODOT, both segments are "80 percent complete," although the remaining work varies by section. In the U.S. 127-Indiana stretch, for example, ODOT notes that "approximately 50 percent of the concrete pavement is in place," but "all bridge and culvert work is essentially complete." In the Ohio 424-U.S. 127 portion, about 80 percent of the concrete pavement has been installed, but two bridges over Baltimore Road and CSX Railroad -- the interchange for Ohio 424 -- are not yet complete. ODOT officials note that the deck of the eastbound structure will be poured the week of April 20 while the westbound bridge deck will follow in late May. Most of the work on both sections, ODOT officials said, will be done in June and open to traffic by the end of October. ODOT said Indiana officials are expecting to open a section of widened U.S. 24, between the Ohio border and Indiana 101, at about the same time. From Ohio 424 to Napoleon, the new U.S. 24 is open to traffic, although some pavement and seeding work remains, according to ODOT. Outside District I, the U.S. 24 project will continue this year in Henry County from Napoleon to Henry County Road 4A. That segment, too, is expected to be completed by the fall. The last two stretches of the project -- from Henry County Road 4A to the existing U.S. 24 east of Dutch Road near Waterville -- are scheduled to begin in June. One segment from County Road 4A to Hertzfeld Road will be completed in November 2011; the other will be finished in November 2012. Other construction projects scheduled on state or federal routes during 2009 in District I or District II, by county, include: Defiance -- Ohio 66 resurfacing, from Jewell Road in Defiance County to the Williams County line. The cost is $597,791. Fulton -- U.S. 20 resurfacing, from Ohio 109 to Ohio 108; Ohio 109 resurfacing, from U.S. 20 to the Ohio-Michigan line; Ohio 109 resurfacing, from just south of Delta to Ohio 2/U.S. 20A. Estimated cost is $3.6 million. Henry -- continued overpass construction for Glenwood Avenue in Napoleon over U.S. 24. The cost is $2.6 million. -- Ohio 424 resurfacing, between Henry County Road M and the Defiance County line. Estimated cost is $2 million. -- wetland construction near Turkeyfoot and Dry creeks. This will compensate for wetlands impacted by the U.S. 24 project. The cost is $2.4 million. -- Ohio 108 resurfacing, between Henry County Roads S and W. -- U.S. 6 joint repair. This project is combined with joint repair work on I-75 in Lucas and Wood counties. The cost for all this work is $2 million. Paulding -- Ohio 114 resurfacing, from the Indiana line to U.S. 127 in Paulding County. The cost is $1,378,028. -- Ohio 49 resurfacing, from U.S. 30 in Van Wert to the south corporation limit of Payne. Estimated cost is $854,000. Putnam -- Ohio 190 resurfacing, from Fort Jennings to U.S. 224; and Ohio 694 resurfacing, from Ohio 115 to the west corporation limits of Glandorf. Estimated cost is $1,050,000. -- Ohio 65 resurfacing, from the Norfolk Southern Railroad in Leipsic to the Henry County line. The cost is $680,979. -- U.S. 224 resurfacing, from the Van Wert County line to the east corporation limits of Kalida; Ohio 114 resurfacing, from the west corporation limits of Kalida to U.S. 224; and Ohio 189 resurfacing in Ottoville. The cost is $1,578,531. Williams -- Ohio 49 resurfacing, from just north of Edgerton to the Defiance County line. The cost is $983,877. -- culvert construction and bridge repair on Ohio's 15 and 576. Three culverts will be repaired and/or replaced on Ohio 15, between U.S. 20A and Bryan, while a bridge will be repaired on Ohio 576, three miles west of Bryan. Estimated cost is $842,000. Comments
