SHERWOOD -- A fire that broke out Monday afternoon caused heavy damage to a Sherwood home and closed U.S. 127 for nearly three hours.

Sherwood Fire Chief Steve Fitzwater said this morning that the fire at 304 S. Harrison St. started in the basement of the home and moved into voids in the attic.

Firefighters from Sherwood were aided by Delaware Township, Hicksville and Ney-Washington Township departments in fighting the blaze.

Sherwood firefighters returned to extinguish flare-ups this morning.

Fitzwater said no injuries were reported and the fire is not considered suspicious.

U.S. 127 was closed from 1:46-4:28 p.m. Monday as firefighters had to run a hose across the highway to fight the blaze. Traffic was controlled with the help of deputies from the Defiance County Sheriff's Office. Sherwood police and Ohio Highway Patrol troopers also assisted at the scene.

Investigators were expected to be on the scene today to determine the cause of the fire and assess the damage.

Firefighters dealt with heavy smoke as they began to combat the blaze, which Fitzwater said was caused by burning insulation inside the home.

I'm hoping a fund will be set up to help the family. Please post any information here.
