There are only 364 shopping days left until Christmas.

Shoppers were out early today grabbing up sales on merchandise for use now as well as next Christmas.

Estelle Vigil of Defiance was at Northtowne Mall at 5:30 a.m. today.

"I was waiting for the stores to open," she said while waiting for a ride to pick her up. "There's barely any traffic."

Vigil said her van had broken down but "that's not going to stop me."

She was buying presents for this year.

At Elder-Beerman, Jill Messer of Napoleon was looking for items for her son. She said this was the first time in a long time she had been out shopping after Christmas.

"I'm just looking for deals," she said.

Also out hunting for deals was Cara Bolley of Ayersville. She was at Kohl's this morning.

"I got some graduation party stuff," she said, motioning to the shopping cart.

Also at Kohl's was Aundrea Apt of West Unity and Katie Siebenaler of Montpelier.

Apt said she usually shops both the day after Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas.

"I like these sales better," Apt said.

Siebenaler said she usually just shops the day after Thanksgiving. However, this year she decided to accompany Apt.

At Meijer, shoppers were snapping up holiday items on sale.

"We're getting a little cabin fever and want to look for deals," said Ann Panning of Napoleon, who was shopping with her daughter, Meredith. "We're looking for a Christmas tree for my daughter."

Meredith Panning said she likes shopping the day after Christmas.

"There's a lot of Christmas stuff cheap," she said.

Elsa Sanchez of Archbold was also purchasing Christmas items.

"I like to buy the gift boxes and wrapping paper for next year," she said.

Heather Ruffer of Archbold was also looking for holiday merchandise. She said she always comes to Defiance for shopping.

"(I'm out) to get Christmas stuff cheap, hopefully," she said.

Retailers are hoping a lot of people snatch up deals.

Valerie Stumbo of Meijer said she hopes more customers come in and check out the sales.

"It usually runs for about a week," she said of the sales, adding that the store will get a lot of people coming in with gift cards yet today.

Lots of customers were at Sears early today.

"It's been pretty busy," store manager Andrew Shepherd said this morning. "We have door busters today until noon. We opened early at 7 today. It's been pretty busy. Customers are out looking for a bargain."

"There were people standing at the door this morning when I opened at 5:30," a representative from JCPenney said this morning. "The sales are out and there people are coming in."
