By CHUCK MARTINEZ-BRANDON The Defiance High School wrestling team will head into its two-week Christmas break with some much-needed momentum. Wrestling under the newly hung spotlight at the DHS "Dawg Pound," the Bulldogs recorded 10 pins en route to victories over visiting Lima Senior (57-12) and league foe Ottawa-Glandorf (57-20). In the third bout of the night, the Titans topped Lima Senior, 42-19. "We wrestled hard and put up a lot of points," explained DHS mentor Josh Neilson, whose club moves to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in WBL matches. "That's good heading into Christmas. This gives us a lot of confidence heading into the break." With only eight varsity wrestlers, the Spartans were outgunned coming into Monday's action, but the Bulldogs weren't about to go through the motions. After losing the first bout of the night, the Bulldogs won six of the next seven to easily get past the Spartans. Picking up pins along the way for DHS was B.J. Miller (112), Terry Wagenhauser (152), Clay Roehrig (160), Desmond Yarnell (171). After the Spartans' loss to the Titans in the second match, things were a little more heated between the Bulldogs and O-G. A Cody Manon first-period pin at 140 and a forfeit at 152 helped the Bulldogs keep a one-point edge, 12-11, over the Titans heading into the 160-pound match. At 160, Wagenhauser and Jeff Siefker gave the crowd its moneys worth. After going up 2-1 through two minutes, Siefker got caught trying to turn Wagenhauser 30 seconds into the second period. The two-point near-fall gave Wagenhauser the lead, if only for a moment. Siefker quickly hit a switch to regain control before recording a pair of near-fall points of his own with 1:25 left in the second period. The duo traded reversals before Wagenhauser regained control and picked up three more back points to close out the second period with an 11-8 edge. The rough-and-tumble match that had points given for illegal holds and unsportsman-like conduct saw the two fight tooth-and-nail in the third. In the end it was Wagenhauser who continued to score in the final two minutes to claim a 16-9 victory and expand the DHS lead, 15-11. At 171, the Titans stormed back. In a showdown between district qualifiers, it was O-G's Jake Recker taking control in the second period. After a reversal to start the second period, Recker turned Yarnell to pick up the stick in 3:35. The loss was the first of the season for Yarnell (12-1), as the Titans regained the lead, 17-15. The pin was the second of the night for Recker, who was joined by teammate Zac Klausing as a two-match winner. Despite a late flurry by DHS' Mike Ramirez, the Titans managed another decision at 189 to add three more points between themselves and the Bulldogs. But Bulldog senior Glenn Ward put a stop to any momentum the Titans gained and gave it all to Defiance. Ward picked up a :24 pin in his 215-pound match to give Defiance a one-point edge, 21-20 and started a wave of six-point decisions for DHS. Defiance heavyweight Nolan Bachellor followed with a first-period pin of his own and O-G forfeits at 103 and 112 gave Defiance an insurmountable 39-20 lead heading into the final three matches. "Actually once we got to Glenn we started rolling pretty good," said Neilson. "Glenn came up with a big stick and was really aggressive. Nolan was the same way and did well. And then once we went to 103 we were picking up steam." Just for good measure the Bulldogs tacked on three more pins. Junior state placer B.J. Miller kept his record clean (13-0) with his second pin of the night and Adam Bates (125) and Cory Carnahan (130) followed suit with falls of their own to give the Bulldogs a 57-20 victory and something positive to take into the holiday break. "Coming out of the break we have Lima Bath (Jan. 6 at Lima Bath)," ended Neilson. "And Bath is one of the league-leaders after the pool tournaments. They've got some strong wrestlers. But we have a lot of confidence going into the break and we know what we have to work on. We'll take a couple days off over Christmas and come back working harder than before."
