Local Sports Briefs: Swimming, Basketball

The Defiance boys and girls swim teams opened their seasons by sweeping St. Marys on Tuesday at the Defiance Area YMCA.

The Defiance boys won 123-49 behind double winners William Johns and Justin Kahle. Johns won the 200 and 500 freestyle, while Kahle was victorious in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 IM.

Also winning for the Defiance boys were Ryan McDonough in the 50 free, John Ferland in the 100 free, Nick Rath in the 100 backstroke, Marcos Hernandez in the 100 butterfly, while the 200 freestyle relay, the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams also swept to victories.

The Defiance girls were 106-67 winners over the Roughriders.

First-place finishers for the Lady Bulldogs included Karrah Rath in the 50 free, Victoria Romes in the 100 free, Emily Sanchez in the 100 backstroke, Kelsie Campbell in the 200 IM, Emmy Johansen in diving, while the 200 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay all won.

Defiance is back in action on Thursday at home against O-G.

Bears top Pilots: The Bryan boys and girls swim teams swept Ayersville with the boys winning 108-40 and the girls winning, 101-50.

Tyler Bock placed first in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly for the Golden Bears, while Jordan Robinson won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Jessy Florence took first in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke for the Lady Pilots, while Rachel Francis won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle for the Bears.

Wildcats split: The Napoleon boys and girls swim teams split wins Tuesday at Toledo, with the boys falling to St. Francis 199-116 and the girls defeating St. Ursula, 161-133.

Ryan Harper placed first in the 100 freestyle for the Napoleon boys (1-1).

Samantha Zuch won the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke for the Napoleon girls (2-0).

Stryker falls: The Stryker freshman boys basketball team fell to 1-1 after a 39-31 loss to Edgerton. Garrett Fritch led the Panthers with nine points.

Game time changed: The Defiance boys freshman basketball game on Monday at Paulding will start at 5 p.m. instead of 4:30 p.m.
