Another stellar football season resulted in 25 area athletes earning first team honors on the Northwest District teams as selected by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters.

Patrick Henry's Cody Pettit headlines the area's group of honorees after being named the Division V co-Defensive Player of the Year.

"First and foremost Cody Pettit is an athlete," PH coach Bill Inselmann said of his two-way lineman that will play college football at Central Michigan. "It's his athleticism and quickness along with his size that make him so tough to block as a defensive lineman. But the other part that sets him apart is his hustle. He's got a high motor and he's constantly going hard on defense until the whistle."

In addition to Pettit's honor, PH coach Bill Inselmann was selected co-Coach of the Year in Division V along with Liberty-Benton's Tim Nichols. Inselmann led the Patriots to another unbeaten season, a number two ranking in the final Associated Press state poll and a berth in the playoffs. The Patriots face Liberty-Benton on Saturday at Bowling Green in the regional finals.

"Any time a coach gets an award like this it's the result of success that the team has had as well as the players and the assistant coaches that are around him," Inselmann noted.

Defiance had a pair of players garner first team accolades in senior running back Travis Spitnale and junior defensive back Alex Nofziger.

"They're very deserving for two reasons," said Buti, who also had four players, Jacob Rubio, Glenn Ward, Jake Suman and Max Peter earn second team honors and Casey Fuhrmann, Jacob Moser and Serge Mayeku honorable mention. "They're two of the hardest workers and two of the nicest kids in the building. They're great role models for younger kids."

Spitnale ran for 1,693 yards (third most in school history) and 16 touchdowns this year in helping the Bulldogs to a berth in the the Division III playoffs.

"We've had a great tradition of runners and Travis fits right in there," Buti said. "But I'm sure he'd tell you this honor is also for the offensive line."

Nofziger had six interceptions and 32 tackles for DHS, which tied for first place in the Western Buckeye League.

"Alex is one of the best defensive backs we've ever had here," Buti added. "He's got a nose for the ball. He's challenged every week because we always put him on the best receiver."

Napoleon linebacker Cody Bloom and Bryan defensive back Alex Nossaman were also first team in Division III.

Paulding wide receiver Andrew Mott was first team in Division IV, joining the Ottawa-Glandorf trio of Cody Warnecke, Jacob Lugo and Brian Schmiedebusch.

"That's awesome, it's well deserved," Paulding coach Chris Etzler said of Mott being named first team after a 40-catch season that resulted in 646 yards and 10 TDs. "Andrew is a great athlete who has worked very hard to achieve what he has gotten so far. He was a great leader by example for our program and I can't say enough about him or his great attitude. Andrew is an excellent student and role model here at Paulding and this award is very well deserved."

Patrick Henry's Mitch Leonard, Mike Gobrogge and Justin Buegner were also named first team in D-V along with Pettit while Archbold had a trio of players named first team in Jake Fidler, Jared Leininger and David Rupp.

Fairview and Tinora put two players on the Division V first team, Ben Wonderly and James Elchinger for the Apaches and John Hammersmith and Lucas Willitzer for the Rams. Hicksville junior running back Logan Battershell also was first team as was Liberty Center punter Jacob Howard.

Ayersville standout runner Anthony King was first team in Division VI, joined by the Pandora-Gilboa trio of Nathan Hovest, Josh Lee and Tyler Swary.
