By GEORGIA KOHART OAKWOOD -- Lions and tigers and all sorts of jungle fun will be afoot at the 2008 Oakwood Homecoming. "Journey through the Jungle" is the theme for the celebration taking place over the Labor Day holiday weekend. Deedi Miller, one of the many homecoming organizers, stated, "We're looking forward to another great weekend like we've had in the past. As always, volunteers are always welcome to help out with the many features and activities we have going on all weekend." The safari departs at 5:30 p.m. Friday from the big tent when the Oakwood Library Association hosts "Jest of the Jungle," the theme for its annual dinner and entertainment. Tickets are $15 each and are currently on sale at Cooper Community Library. The homecoming committee is again sponsoring an adult softball tournament beginning Saturday. It will be a men's double-elimination, hit-your-own-ball tournament. Team registration is $125. The winning team will receive a team trophy and T-shirts. Teams will be drawn Wednesday at 7 p.m. To enter, call Johnny at 419-238-5902, Lance at 419-399-7962 or Tami at 419-399-2310. To keeps things exciting, some new events have been added to this year's roster of activities, including a Tarzan yelling contest and Mark's Ark, a traveling exotic animal zoo. Also new will be community day of play and extreme trampoline, the "Wheel of Fortune" game (sponsored by the State Bank and Trust) and movie night in the park (sponsored by Paulding Exempted Village Schools). Saturday morning begins with breakfast. Serving will be from 9-11 a.m. at the Oakwood Fire Station, located at 201 N. Sixth St. After that, eligible donors are encouraged to stop in at the bloodmobile being held at the same location from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Free T-shirts will be presented to those giving blood. Bakers wishing to enter the bake-off are to drop off their entries at the old fire station from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Entries requiring refrigeration will not be accepted. A silent auction of the baked goods will take place from 4:30-7 p.m. At 1 p.m., everyone is invited to head over to Oakwood Memorial Park for a community day of play. Activity stations, including the pedal pull, will be operating until 2:30 p.m., when the pudding eating contests begins in the gazebo. This event is open to children up through sixth grade. A corn hole tournament is scheduled for 4 p.m. (registration is at the gazebo). After all the sticky hands and faces are wiped clean, the Little Miss Oakwood Pageant begins in the big tent at 3 p.m., followed by the Junior Miss Oakwood Pageant at 4 p.m. and the Little King and Queen contest at 5 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Oakwood will be announced during community recognition at 6 p.m., and Miss Oakwood will be crowned at 7 p.m. Pageant rules and entry forms are available at Cooper Community Library. Those wishing to participate in "Puttin' on the Hits" at 8 p.m. should sign up in the gazebo at 7 p.m. Movie in the park begins at 9 p.m. and will feature "George of the Jungle." Those attending may want to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs. Breakfast will be ready bright and early Sunday, with serving beginning at 6:30 a.m. at Twin Oaks United Methodist Church. Family Chiropractic is sponsoring the 8 a.m. health walk. Weigh-in for the tractor pull starts at 8 a.m. at the elevator, with the pull scheduled for 10 a.m. A community church service will take place at 9:30 a.m. in the big tent. At 1 p.m., registration begins at the gazebo for youngsters interested in participating in kids' "Fear Factor" at 3 p.m., and inflatables will be in operation from 3-8 p.m. Sunday. At 4 p.m., the adult construction contest begins. Sign-up for the "Amazing Race" is at 4:30 p.m. Entry fee for a team of two is $10, with the winning team taking home $100. The Oakwood Alumni Banquet will take place at 5 p.m. at the elementary school. The kiddie parade time has been changed to 7 p.m. this year, with lineup at Twin Oaks United Methodist Church starting at 6 p.m. This year's theme is "Jungle Fever." At 8 p.m., jackpot bingo will be held in the American Legion post and the musical group, Armory, sponsored by Twin Oaks United Methodist Church, will perform in the gazebo. The grand marshal, Verda Leatherman, will start off the Labor Day parade at 11 a.m. Monday, for which entries are still being accepted. For more information, contact Beth Kelly at 419-399-9011. Following the parade, the Oakwood Elementary PTO will be serving a dinner in the school. The menu includes turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, roll, dessert and beverage. Cost will be $7.50 for adults, $4.50 for children ages 3-12 and $1 for ages 3 and under. Pre-sale tickets are available at a reduced price through the school office. The Defiance String Ensemble and Ukulele Band will perform in the gazebo at noon, while inflatables and extreme trampoline will be in operation from 12:30-5:30 p.m. Mark's Ark will be in the big tent at 1 p.m. and waterball is scheduled for that time at the firehouse. "Wheel of Fortune" promises many prizes in the big tent at 2 p.m. Registration begins at 1 p.m. All would-be Tarzans and Janes are encouraged to participate in the Tarzan yelling contest at 3:30 p.m. Another corn hole tournament takes place at 4 p.m., followed by jackpot bingo at 5 p.m. and the exciting conclusion of the weekend with the duck race and raffle drawings at 6:15 p.m. For more information or to volunteer, contact Miller at 419-594-3548 or Tami AuFrance at 419-594-2310.
