COLUMBUS -- For the fourth straight year Ohio News Network (ONN) will televise high school football on Friday nights, with additional action on Saturdays. The television schedule opens up on Friday, Aug. 22 with Cincinnati Colerain meeting Cincnnati St. Xavier at 10 p.m. St. Xavier is the reigning Division I state champion. Newark Licking Valley and Zanesville will be the Aug. 29 televised game. Licking Valley, featuring Ohio State recruit Storm Klein, was Division III state runner-up last seeason while Zanesville is a Division II power. Solon and Mentor will be the week three game on Sept. 5. Mentor has been Division I state runner-up the past two seasons while Solon has been in the playoffs nine consecutive seasons. The remaining schedule finds Nordonia at Brunswick on Sept. 12, Pickerington North against Pickerington Central on Sept. 19, Olentangy Orange vs. New Albany on Sept. 26, Olentangy vs. Olentangy Liberty on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. and Columbus DeSales vs. Columbus Watterson on Oct. 3. All televised Friday games will be shown at 10 p.m. with coverage starting at 9:45 p.m. The schedule for the final three Fridays of the regular season will be announced at a later date. David Bacon will again be the play-by-play announcer with Justin Zwck giving color commentary and Katie Witham reporting from the sidelines. * Tennis Wauseon prevails: Wauseon captured all three singles matches to defeat Defiance 3-2 in girls tennis action. "We played some very good tennis players,' said DHS co-head coach Doug Reineke "Our seniors are playing well, we just haven't shown up in he win column yet. The young kids are coming along and I think we can fair well in the WBL." Wauseon is now 1-1 while DHS is 0-2. Singles 1. Jesse Vietmeier (W) def. Kaitlyn Soukup, 6-3, 6-3. 2. Breanna Beard-Kali August, 6-0, 6-0. * Elsewhere BGSU tickets: Single-game tickets for the upcoming season of Bowling Green State University football are on sale. The Falcons will play Minnesota Saturday, Sept. 6, Eastern Michigan on Oct. 4 (homecoming), Miami on Oct. 18 (family weekend), Kent State on Nov. 1 (Hall of Fame/varsity BG weekend) and Buffalo on Nov. 21 (senior recognition). In addition to season tickets that start at $65, fans who purchase single-game tickets in advance will save $3 per ticket. Tickets can be purchased online at BGSUFALCONS.COM, over the phone at 877-BGSUTICKET, and in-person at the BGSU Athletic Ticket Office (Memorial Hall on the BGSU campus) on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Extend contract: The San Diego Padres have extended their player development conract with the Fort Wayne Wizards of the Class A Midwest League for two years through the 2010 season. The announcement was made almost two weeks after Padres officials toured the new Harrison Square Ballpark, which will become the Wizards' home next year. Padres vice president Grady Fuson called the new stadium and the renewed affiliation with the Midwest League team "a tremendous environment" for the players and staff. Since becoming a minor league affiliate of the Padres in 1999, 34 Wizards players have reached the major leagues, including last year's NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy.The Wizards have compiled a 652-712 record over parts of 10 seasons. The Sports Business Journal ranked Fort Wayne the number one minor league city iin 2007. The Wizards will move into their new home in downtown Fort Wayne, Harrison Square Ballpark, in 2009.
Schedule changes: Changes to the Defiance High School boys and girls soccer schedules are as follows: Boys soccer: The varsity game at Toledo Whitmer has been moved from Sept. 11 to Tuesday, Aug. 26; The varsity game at Van Wert Sept. 15 will be played at John Brown Field at 5 p.m. The junior varsity will play half of a game after the varsity; On Oct. 2, the junior varsity will play Lima Bath at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m. Girls soccer: The junior varsity team has had the following games added to the schedule: Aug. 26 at O-G; Sept 2 Wapakoneta home; Sept. 9 at St. Marys; Sept. 25 at Elida; Sept 30 Lima Bath home.
