Local Sports Briefs: Napoleon tennis team opens with victory

SANDUSKY -- The Napoleon Lady Wildcats tennis team opened the season with a 5-0 Greater Buckeye Conference victory over Sandusky.

"This was a good start for us," said Napoleon mentor Mike Burke.

Singles

1. Mackenzie Eickhoff (N) def. Hannah Reidy, 6-2, 6-3. 2. Meredith Small (N) def. Taylor Linden, 6-0, 6-0. 3. Alayna Schlade (N) def. Sarah Strohl, 6-0, 6-0.

Edgerton wins: Edgerton beat Hicksville and North Central in a tri-match at Windwood Hollow.

Trent Feltz shot a 39 to lead the Bulldogs, which finished with a 176 score.

* Baseball

Reineke starts: Ayersville graduate Chad Reineke made his first start for the Portland Beavers (San Diego Padres Triple A affiliate) since July 31 on Monday at the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

Reineke, who received a no-decision, lasted five innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits. He walked just one and fanned three.

After Portland plated two runs in the seventh to knot the game at 4-4, but the Sky Sox scored eight times in their half of the seventh and earned a 12-4 victory.

DHS camp: The Defiance High School baseball coaching staff will be conducting a pitching and catching camp on Mondays throughout the month of September. The camp will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and is open to the first 50 players in grades 5-12 from the area.

The cost of the camp is free, but a donation that will go toward Challenge Day at Defiance High School is appreciated. Registration forms can be downloaded at riverbanditbaseball.com. For more information contact Tom Held at 419-782-1114.

Fall baseball: The Defiance Baseball Association is sponsoring a Youth Baseball Fall Ball League.

Two leagues are being formed, one for kids who will be 9 and 10 next Little League season and one for kids who will be 11 and 12. Each league will have four teams with a limit of 13 players on each roster.

This league is open to any player in northwest Ohio. Placements will be made on a first come, first served basis. Registration form and money must be returned to guarantee placement.

To begin Aug. 31: The 2008 River Bandit fall baseball classic will begin play at the end of August. The classic is for high school players who will have eligibility in the spring of 2009.

Games will be held Sundays beginning Aug. 31 and continue through Sept. 28.

The cost is $150 and the top players at the classic will be invited back for two weeks of all-star competition in front of college coaches and scouts.

DC picked fifth: Defiance College was tabbed fifth in the the 2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball preseason coaches poll. DC placed five student-athletes on the HCAC Watch List.

The Lady Jackets gained 39 votes in the poll to trail Mount St. Joseph, Anderson, Manchester and Hanover in the standings. DC was followed by Transylvania, Bluffton, Franklin and Rose-Hulman.

Youth football: Any student, boy or girl, in the Defiance school system, public or parochial, who will be entering fifth or sixth grade and has not reached age 13 before Sept. 1, 2008 is eligible to play Defiance youth football.

All students who want to play must be at the Riverside Park shelter house on Saturday, Aug. 16 for registration and tryouts.

Registration will be held from 9:30-10 a.m. with tryouts beginning at 10 a.m. Students who live in and attend the Defiance school district must play for a Defiance team.

Any student who played last year does not have to enroll and will be contacted by their coach.
