By BECKY MARTINEZ HICKSVILLE -- Looking for entertainment? Don't look too far. The 131st Defiance County Fair, slated to run Aug. 16-23 is loaded with fun things for the entire family including the Broken Horn Rodeo, combine derby, NTPA tractor pull and demolition derby. But that's not all. There are hundreds of exhibits, many planned activities, rides and yummy concessions. "We're looking and praying for good weather, no rain," said Judy Bayliss, secretary/treasurer with the Defiance County Agriculture Society. "4-H projects are up. The fine arts and ag buildings have entries up. Grandpa Crachet will be back. We're looking to have a good fair, good food," said Bayliss. She mentioned that discount tickets -- $1 off -- are on sale now through Friday at Sherwood Marathon and the fair secretary's office. The discount tickets are for Broken Horn Rodeo, combine demolition derby and the NTPA tractor pull. There are no discount tickets for the demolition derby. "The Broken Horn Rodeo is Saturday at 7:30 p.m., followed by the combine derby on Sunday at 7 p.m.. The tractor pull is Aug. 21, at 7 p.m. Non-discounted prices for each of the events are $8 infield and $7 grandstand. Fair gates open Saturday at 12 p.m. General admission is $5 for adults and $3 for youth ages 9-18. On the last Saturday of the fair, admission is $5 per car load. Rides open at 12 p.m. on Saturday and harness racing will be held in front of the grandstand with free grandstand admission. Also Saturday, a Catholic Mass will be held in the Senior Citizen's tent at 8 p.m. The rest of the week, fair gates will open at 7 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. Sunday's events begin early with a devotional service in the show arena at 8 a.m. Horseshoe pitching begins at 9 a.m., and the straw loading contest will be held in the infield at 1 p.m. Also Sunday, the Kid's Pedal Pull is slated in the show arena at 2 p.m., the Senior Citizen's tent will house gospel music from 2-4 p.m.. A 4-H stick horse rodeo will be presented in the horse arena at 5:30 p.m. And again, the Combine Demolition Derby will be held in front of the grandstand starting at 7 p.m. Monday brings many traditional evening events in front of the grandstand with $2 admission. Events kick off with the presentation of colors at 6:15 p.m. followed by the parade of junior fair youth organizations and crowning of the 4-H king and queen. At 7:30 p.m., the parade of bands will be held. The 4-H/Fairview Young Farmers pig catch follows that event. A barn dance will also be held in the Strausbaugh Arena from 9-11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, is Senior Citizens' Day and Handicapped Awareness Day. Registration begins at 10 a.m. in the senior citizens' tent. From 10-11 a.m., the tent will house the Frank Westfall Band, followed by banjo players from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. A free lunch will be served from 12-1 p.m. Also planned for that day is bingo from 1-2 p.m., a 4-H fashion show and horseshoe pitching from 2-3 p.m., a story teller from 3-4 p.m., a barbecue rib dinner from 4:30-6 p.m., and Betty's Polka band from 6-8 p.m. In addition to the planned senior citizen events, there will be a draft house pull at 2 p.m., harness racing at 7 p.m. with free grandstand admission, and the junior fair decorated rabbit and poultry contest in the Strausbaugh show arena at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, is Veteran's Day and Women's Day. The popular veteran's bean soup supper will be served in the senior citizens' tent starting at 4 p.m. Women's Day events include "Quick Clean the Clutter" at 12 p.m., belly dancing at 1 p.m. and a flower demonstration at 2 p.m. All events will be held in the senior citizens' tent. Other events include a garden tractor pull in front of the grandstand at 3 p.m., harness racing at 7 p.m., again with free grandstand admission, and mutton bustin' at 7 p.m. in the show arena. At 8:30 p.m., a corn hole tournament will be held in the show arena. Thursday, Aug. 21, is Kid's Day. Kids can ride all they want from 12-5 p.m. with a ride wrist band costing just $10. Junior Fair games are slated for the show arena starting at 12 p.m., face painting will be offered in the multipurpose building starting at 1 p.m., the Defiance County Soil and Water Conservation District will conduct a program on bats at 4 p.m., and the sheriff's office will present a scavenger hunt and prizes at 6 p.m. with free snow cones at 7 p.m. The NTPA tractor pull will be held in front of the grand stand starting at 7 p.m. On Friday, Aug. 22, the Junior Fair livestock auction will begin in the show arena at 10 a.m. The Defiance SWCD host a kids' program on butterflies at 4 p.m. and harness racing, again with free grandstand admission, will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, the final day of the fair, features the demolition derby in front of the grandstand beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $8 infield and $7 grandstand.
